LVA Review

This restaurant was reviewed in the October 2012 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate. When we wrote about Naked City Pizza in June, we mentioned several good sandwiches, but left out what might be the best. Beef on weck is a Buffalo specialty—sliced rare beef with horseradish sauce on a kummelweck roll. This is a superb version for $10 and one of the few sandwiches in town that we’d devote space to alone in LVA. But while we’re at it, here’s something else of note. Naked City now offers six daily specials—e.g., mussels, steak & eggplant sliders, cannelloni—and you can try them all by ordering the tasting menu for $39 ($54 with beer and wine pairings). Naked City is located inside Moon Doggie’s at 3240 S. Arville, which makes this the first dive-bar tasting menu we’ve ever encountered. (Go on a Tuesday night and hang out with the vivacious Kim Lee behind the bar.) This restaurant was reviewed in the June 2012 LVA; some of the information contained in the review may no longer be accurate. When you read that this is “the most authentic Buffalo pizzeria west of Hertel Avenue,” you immediately think chicken wings and pizza, but there’s a lot more going on at the Naked City Pizza Shop, located in Moon Doggie’s Bar & Grill about three miles west of the Strip. Owner and Buffalo native Chris Palmeri was formerly the chef at MGM’s Diego, then left it to open his own place in the “Naked City” area of the Strip (Naked Sandwich Shop was our Local Corner in May 2010). Soon after he moved to Moon Doggie’s and has been expanding his operation ever since. Naked now has hot and cold subs, pasta, tacos, pizzas, and a several variations on fries, including garlic, poutine, and the vaunted suicide fries. Cold subs are $5 for a half and $8 for a whole and hot are $7 and $10. All, including chicken or meatball parm, beef on weck, and the “Meathead” (brisket), come on toasted rolls. Good Buffalo-style wings go from 80¢ apiece to 56¢, depending on quantity. It’s all good, but best is the pizza. It’s a square thick-crust style, served by the “sheet” in three sizes—“Wee” ($8), “Not So Wee” ($13), and “Frickin’ Huge” ($23) for cheese. Specialty pies are $11, $17, and $28, respectively. The size differentiation is especially important to LVA members, given a great MRO we’ve just secured for an upgrade to the next size up from what you pay for. These are some of the biggest pizzas in town, and a Not So Wee specialty pizza can easily feed four. Use the coupon and you get it for just $11. Super deal! But you don’t have to take our word for it: Naked City Pizza will be featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” on June 4. One more bit of history. The owner of Moon Doggie’s played rugby with Anthony Curtis for many years, so there’s a good chance you’ll see A.C. hangin’ out. Be sure to say hi.
