Michael Gaughan, owner of South Point, came of age during the heyday of Las Vegas' fine-dining gourmet rooms and steakhouses. When we first arrived in Las Vegas in the late '70s, Michael's at Gaughan's Barbary Coast (now the Cromwell) was the epitome of the genre. The new version of Michael's at South Point and the Silverado Steakhouse are throwbacks to the good old days; in the Silverado room, hand-painted murals and vintage photographs line the walls above plush high-backed booths, the style of choice in those old gourmet rooms. If you want to combine some nostalgia with big juicy steaks and chops, fresh seafood, and continental dishes whose prices include salad and potato or vegetable, this is one of the best places in town. South Point boasts lots of good dining options, including the sports book’s deli and hot dog cart (see Top Ten), and that extends to the higher-end with the Silverado Steakhouse. At first glance, it doesn’t look like a bargain, with steaks priced up to $52 for a New York strip. But this is the rare fine-dining restaurant at which the entrée comes as an entire meal, including choice of potato or vegetable, bread, and a salad prepared tableside. Trust us, you don’t need an appetizer, so it’s just the one price, and the steaks begin at $36 for an 8-ounce filet, fish is $36, chicken is $31, and ratatouille (veggie) is $26. We had an awesome dry-aged bone-in ribeye ($48) and a 12-ounce prime rib ($31). When it comes to that potato-or-vegetable choice, take the baked potato. We know this sounds funky (what’s so good about a baked potato, right?), but both in our party agreed it was one of the highlights of the meal. The room has an old-style Vegas gourmet atmosphere—good place for a mini-splurge.

    Very good
My wife ordered the 8 ounce filet mignon while I selected the in house dry-aged, 12-ounce prime rib. Entrees include a Silverado salad and a salt encrusted baked potato. Our entrees were flavorful with service throughout our meal deemed attentive.

    The spud stars
Seniors are charged only 1/2 points against their slot cards on Mondays so we chose to dine at the South Point's steakhouse. A basket of rolls and bread were provided, shortly followed by the house salad tossed table side. Each of us chose the 12-ounce dry aged prime rib, medium rare if you would be so kind, along with a baked potato and sour cream. The beef, served with au jus and horseradish sauce, was good, but the baker was one of the best we ever have enjoyed. I inquired and was told by our server that it is brushed with olive oil and sprinkled lightly before being triple wrapped with aluminum foil. This process was done twice more during the baking process. Service was very good throughout our meal.

    Senior Mondays
A senior promotion that runs each Monday at the South Point allows those of the silver set to dine at any of their restaurants and be charged only 1/2 points. Since my wife and I happen to be seniors, have previously enjoyed dinners at this restaurant and have the necessary points, it was pretty much a given for us to dine there on our recent trip. We also were allowed to use a funbook coupon for a bottle of May's featured wine, Storypoint cabernet sauvignon, that proved to be more than acceptable. Though sorely tempted, we took a pass on the proferred bread basket, but gratefully accepted the table side tossed salad. Each of us chose to have our 8 ounce filet mignons done rare with one choosing the always excellent baked potato and the other asparagus. Both steaks were cooked perfectly, tender and delicious, while service throughout was very good.
