LVA Review

(This show was reviewed in the December 2004 LVA when the show was at Imperial Palace; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate.)

Legends in Concert is one of a dozen or so Las Vegas superstar-impersonator shows. Playing at the Imperial Palace for well over a decade, it usually features seven tribute acts. Most are good, but some are better than others and it’s a good idea to check the line-up before you go. Rule of thumb: The more “dead” acts (Bobby Darin, Marilyn Monroe, Liberace) on the list the better. The current acts (Tim McGraw, Barry White, Rod Stewart) just aren’t as talented. Elvis appears at the end of every show, which is good -- since Legends has the best lighting, staging, sound, and live band of all such shows, you’re assured of seeing the best Elvis in town. Elvis is on for nearly 30 of the 90 minutes, so if you love the King, you’re certain to get your money’s worth. The “stage candy”—the backup singers and women dancers—are among the sexiest in town. If you don’t like the act they’re backing, sit back and watch the hot dancers.

Legends is notorious for its timid discounting—offering the same easy-to-obtain-from-the-freebies $3-off coupon for years. However, half-price tickets are almost always available from the same-day discounters. You have to exchange them for IP tickets when you get there, so arrive early enough to avoid getting stuck in a line and missing the start of the show. At the late shows mid-week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at 10 pm), ticket sales are lowest. Get the cheap seats and sit in back (there isn’t a bad spot in the 650-seat room). If you arrive just before the show starts, you may get a front-row seat anyway. Legends has recently done away with “tipping for a better seat,” so the best way to get up front is to buy those (expensive) tickets from the half-price outlets. You can also ask the accommodating co-maitre d’s (who’ve been there many years) to “please please!” put you up front (many of those seats are left empty every show, because they’re overpriced). Or you can request a comfortable high-back booth.

Legends has gone downhill over the years, and if you pay $120 for two, there’s a good change you’ll leave feeling like you didn’t get your money’s worth. However, if you get in for half-price or $39.95 tops, it’s a good value.

The quality varies with the impersonator. Barry White's mustache kept falling off! Janis Joplin had the "sound" but she was twice 23! The lineup changes, but Elvis is usually there. A good but slightly over-rated "cruise ship grade" show. Energetic dancers in skimpy costumes. A live band. Everyone sings live. No lip sync. Buy the cheaper tickets and use the old $20 upgrade trick. It works if the show is not sold-out as you are seated by "Matre-D's". Make sure you like the "line-up" before you buy.
