Making a rare jump from part-time headliners to full-time house show, the comedy/magic duo of Penn & Teller has taken residence at the Rio. At $71.50 per ticket, this isn't a bargain. But if you like magic and have never seen this act, it may be worth a splurge.
Penn & Teller are as irreverent (some describe them as "dark") as ever. They begin the show with a standard box bit you've seen other magicians do, but then turn the boxes around to show how it's done. They (appear to) mangle a live rabbit in a wood chipper. Penn (appears to) hang himself while Teller does shadow puppets. They make fun of other Las Vegas magicians. Of course, Penn talks incessantly and there's plenty of comedy interspersed. At the end of the act they do their trademark magic-bullet routine.
The Rio's Samba Theater provides good viewing from most seats and expensive drinks are sold in the lobby. The heady magic often requires that you pay close attention. But if you don't mind thinking a little, this is a strong 90 minutes of entertainment.
