LVA Review

This show was reviewed in the April 2018 LVA; some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate.

Wow is the first North American appearance of a 15-year-old water-themed variety show that’s been seen around the world and opened last fall in the redesigned circular showroom at the Rio. Something of a blending of Cirque du Soleil and V—The Ultimate Variety Show, and borrowing from Splash at the old Riviera, the production is fast-paced, high-energy, (mostly) family-friendly and the water effects are impressive. That said, we’ve seen better choreography and dancing, the costumes are often over the top and cheesy, and it’s a bit of a mish-mash of disjointed vignettes, all of which relegate Wow to a sub-category-A show where the individual variety acts are the highlight.

There are some good ones. Aerialists fly and spin using hoops and loops, while acrobats and contortionists perform some amazing feats of strength and balance on ropes and poles. A juggler with Frisbee-like hats is incredibly fast and accurate. An Italian “chef” spins plates to “That’s Amore,” human statues shoot water from various private parts, three synchronized swimmers do a bit in a giant water bowl, and in the Titanic scene (backed, of course, by Céline’s “My Heart Will Go On”), a ballroom dance fills with water and the ship sinks, aided by some dramatic effects. “America’s Got Talent” semifinalist Sylvia Sylvia does various tricks with crossbows, and the most remarkable act is a trio of roller-skaters on a tiny round platform doing spectacular stunts to “You Spin Me Round,” “I Need A Hero,” and “Maniac.” The closing number is a salute to Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain,” with lots of splashing, from which our reviewer, sitting on the side edge of the stage, got a little wet.

Most reviews of Wow claim there’s not a bad seat in the small showroom, but some views from those on the sides get cut off; seats closer to the center, even at the back, are better than the far edges. In our view, this is mostly a value play. Get a good deal on a ticket from the discount sellers or from a code (recently, WOW2GO was good for 50% off) and it’s a go.
