LVA Review

(This show was reviewed in the February 2007 LVA when it was playing at the Las Vegas Hilton, some of the information contained in this review may no longer be accurate.)

From the day this show debuted, we’ve heard, “Don’t judge it by its name” and seen ads that declare, “Men love it too!” This marketing strategy has paid big dividends, as Menopause the Musical has become one of the city’s hottest shows. But are these statements accurate? Let’s take a look.

Don’t judge it by its name. To us this meant one of two things: One, the show’s not really about menopause or two, the show’s about menopause, but it’s good anyway. It’s definitely not number one. While it’s true that the four-woman cast covers a range of issues related to entering middle age, the overriding theme is specifically the so-called change of life, with all its female nuances and connections (some of the jokes will go right over the heads of guys).

As to it being “good anyway,” for many it is, but it won’t be for everyone, which leads to ... Men love it too! Hmmm. We spent a lot of the show looking at audience faces and can say unequivocally that not all men love it. In fact, a few looked like they’d been dragged in for a consultation with a gynecologist. Most seemed to roll with it, but “love” it? No way.

The show itself is well-done, with four talented ladies (Paige O’Hara, for example, has been a Las Vegas mainstay for years) dubbing theme-appropriate lyrics into classic songs from several musical genres — “We’re havin’ a heatwave” becomes “I’m havin’ a hot flash,” and so forth.

Like all good stage shows, Menopause picks up speed, with most of the best bits coming in the last 30 of its 90 minutes.
