Golden Gate — Before and After

LVA correspondent Michael B sent in these two photos, the first of the Golden Gate’s casino rammin’ and jammin’ with live table games and dancing dealers, the second, uh, without. He snapped the Before photo on Sunday evening after Derek Stevens’s speech commemorating the Golden Gate’s long history and announcing the new marketing campaign that includes free drinks every night from 6 to 7 p.m. (if you can get close to the bar) and generous free play for the machines. (He also noted that you can redeem your Golden Gate chips at the D and Circa and there’s “no rush” to do so.) The After photo was taken on Monday night after the joint was cleared out.

And yes, electronic table games will soon be installed, but, well … we leave it to you to draw your own conclusions about the direction (disappearing dealers) of the Golden Gate, Las Vegas, and the gambling biz.

  1. no live dealers SUCKS!! i wont be back

    1. I agree. When I resumed coming to Las Vegas in 2012 after an absence of 25 years, I gravitated to GG for three reasons–DuPar’s Restaurant, old-time atmosphere, and friendly dealers. The first and last are gone, and some of the second will be, too. Unless they bring in some decent video poker, I’ll have no reason to stop in.

Far be it from me to tell management what to do, given their success, but I think they’re making a mistake here.

  2. Stay at the California Hotel and would always stop by the Golden Gate for it’s reasonable black jack and craps. Now that’s gone, why go to back to the GG. Will play more at the Cal,Plaza, Fremont and Four Queens. Don’t understand the move, but it must have to do with salaries. Personally, I have no reason to play at the GG anymore. Oh, well, that’s Vegas. Not the same anymore.

  3. Timing is everything. Glad I stopped by in August and used that match play to double my bet and winnings.
Always liked the GG dealers and old school charm.
The piano player in the back.
    The shrimp cocktail.
Long slow change … Sorry to see it all go.
