That's Yes, singing Owner Of A Lonely Heart. I thought it was an 80s tune, BTW.

OK, some 1972 here:

I don't object if you call collect

"You Wear It Well" Rod Stewart

I have to dig up new

and new is...

One more time for all of the old, old times

Good Morning All,

I’m sure that’s “Midnight Blue” by Melissa Manchester.

Next:

Got to be the finest girl alive

I liked that one. It's Devil With A Blue Dress On, by Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels.

From 1970:

Vernon'll meet me when the Boeing lands

Here are a few more lines and a few hints:

Vernon'll meet me when the Boeing lands
Keys to the MG will be in his hands
Adjust to the drivin' an' I'm on my way

The song, which has a definite Caribbean beat, is about a popular destination on a certain Caribbean island. It reached the #8 spot on the charts in the US (#3 in the UK).

The American artist died in 1974 at the age of 28, while cleaning a gun. He was being treated for depression, and his death was ruled a likely suicide.

I googled. It turns out I never did know the lyrics to that one except the name. I’m out.
Mongo Jerry singing 'Montego Bay' The 'keys to the MG' phrase was the one that did it.

this shouldn't be tough

In tradition with the family plan
That there is a good one, Phil. It’s “Levon” by Elton John.

1968:

But you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone."

Going back to the previous song - sorry - I don't believe that you guessed it correctly -
I know the song - it was Montego Bay - but it wasn't Mungo Jerry - although they did cover it.
I think that this one never made it across the pond - which is why I am still struggling with it. My area is strictly stuff that was at least performed in Britain - and preferrably between 1960 and 1977.

In resonse to your lyrics - probably Elton John, but could be Bon Jovi or Billy Klippert.
