Here’s the whole verse:
Let the little girl through
She wants to pass by you
Buddy, can’t you see
She wants to dance with me
As far as I know, the line “she wants to dance by you” wasn’t in the song, but it’s easy to imagine how the second line in the above verse could have been mistaken for that back in the days of scratchy 45s and crackly AM radio.

Edit: Oops. Now I see that some of the lyrics websites do indeed say "dance by you" rather than "pass by you." When I look at the context, I think "pass" makes more sense, but, I dunno. See what you think
