Beyond me.

I only vaguely recall the story, mostly from the lyrics, but I'll remember that guitar riff forever. Good one!

Hi All,

Yeah, Jim. I’m a little fuzzy on the story too. Deep Purple was set to play at Montreax after Frank Zappa, but an audience member shot off a flare gun into the ceiling. The ensuing fire was a spectacle and Deep Purple went to another hotel across Lake Geneva. I believe that there was smoke wafting over the lake and they couldn’t resist writing a song about their adventure. Anyhow, I think that’s how the story went.

I’ll leave one from the mid-80s:

I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky

That helps, Cyndee. I thought I remembered a line in the Deep Purple song about "a stupid with a flare gun," or something like that. Now I understand.

Pretty sure your song is St. Elmo's Fire. I know it was very popular, but I'm drawing a blank on the singer's name at the moment. Dang.

This is from 1970:

As we drove on through the rain
As he listened, I explained

Well Jim,

I remember how much radio stations used to play it. But, I did not remember who did “St. Elmo’s fire” either until I read this on Wikipedia last week:
The song was originally written by David Foster and John Parr for the Canadian athlete Rick Hansen, who at the time was going around the world in his wheelchair to raise awareness for spinal cord injuries. His journey was called the "Man in Motion Tour."
The song was used as the theme song for the film St. Elmo's Fire, and became a number-one hit for John Parr around the world and provided many awards and a Grammy nomination.
Strangely, this hit song did not also appear on a John Parr album - except on a very rare 1985 CD re-release of his self-titled album from 1984 in West Germany.
Several members of Toto appear on the record.

Yours is “Kentucky Rain” by Elvis Presley.

I hear this quite often:

Sure is mellow, glad that I’m her fellow

That's a 60s song. I think it's Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. For some reason, I'm having trouble with artist/group names tonight. The Buckinghams?

This 1982 song was on an album that was one of the first I ever owned in CD format. I remember being blown away by the digital sound:

Always denied the right to live my life the way I want
I want to share it with you

A few more lines and a hint:

How many times will I think about the things I'd like to do?
Always denied the right to live my life the way I want
I want to share it with you
Close your eyes, I want to ride the skies in my _____ ______

Australian soft-rock duo.

Now I get it. That one is “Sweet Dreams” by Air Supply.

One from 1972:
Don’t even try to understand

Quote

Don’t even try to understand...

...just find a place to make your stand, and Take It Easy. So said the Eagles, anyway. Really liked that one. Great song!
