Well I went ahead and did early voting yesterday. Couldn't have been easier.
There was a longer line than I anticipated, but this is true all over town according to the news.
I actually parked and went to the line just to find out the hours for voting, and I'd go tomorrow or even Saturday. It was cold and rainy all day. By this time the rain was down to very light drizzle. Line extended outside. It was 5:15 pm and I knew that was likely to be a busier time which I would avoid. .
But the line was moving so quickly I thought I'm here, I got a parking place, why bother coming back?
I was behind about 4 people outside, all standing on 6 ft marks apart for social distancing. Mask was required. In no time at all I was waved inside and over to station 1, who took my ID, looked for my name on the rolls, asked me to tell my address (which was on the DL, I guess to confirm I was who I was.). She directed me to another station where a lady printed a long piece of paper with something at the top, handed me a stylus and directed me to the actual voting machine, a modern touch screen. Another person showed me where to insert this long piece of paper which brought up all candidates for election and how to mark my selections with the stylus, including the "next" buttons at the bottom of screens.
Clearly all these poll workers had the goal of speeding us through, as they were quick to pick up quizical looks on our faces and point us the way to the next stop.
I was surprised at the number of Presidential candidates. Two pages full, at least a dozen or more. Trump was the first name, Biden was on the second page. Kanye West was the only other name I recognized, I think on the first page. I didn't pick up on a reason for the order of names. Certainly not alphabetical. Biden was about in the middle left of the second page, two columns on both pages.
One complaint, I noticed the lady who showed me how to make my selections hung close to my left shoulder, like she was looking to see whom I voted for President, or maybe just if I used the stylus on the screen correctly. I went back and forth on the two screens, taking longer than I really needed, until she gave up. I can't swear that was her mission, just seemed like it.
Anyway, it was quick to go through and select the candidates using the stylus. As usual there were some local offices for which I was unfamiliar with all candidates, but overall I was certain of those I voted for.
When I hit the "VOTE" button at the end (actually can't remember the exact wording but I knew it meant I was done), my "ballot" printed out, I stared at it with that lost look and immediately someone pointed me to the actual "voting machine", where a lady was sitting totally wrapped up in a blanket, looking bored and kinda pasty. I asked her if she was cold, she said "yeah, even with this blanket." Hmm, did I just expose myself to Covid? Time will tell.
Anyhow she showed me where to insert the ballot, pointed to a table next to her with the "I Voted" sticker, said "Get a sticker, go out that way and you get a free meal." What??? A free meal? Sure enough, there was a food truck and a nice man asking "would you like some tacos?" Sure. I was given a styro container with two soft tacos, beef I think. Took them home and gave one to husband. They didn't look that impressive but honestly they were very tasty, just the snack I needed. First time I was ever given "a meal" for voting!
I'm so glad I'm done with that! Don't ask. I'll never tell, even my husband I don't tell each other.
