Britain is going to provide direct cost-of-living payments to its citizens to help offset the rising price of necessities. The amount stated is 19 billion pounds (the exact amount will be determined later).
The best part, though, is that will be paid for by a direct windfall profits tax on fossil fuel companies--25% on profits above a certain threshold. Britain's Minister of Finance says the tax and payments will be revenue-neutral. Britain's fossil fuel companies get the most generous tax breaks of any of their industries, so they can easily absorb this one-off tax.
This is the way to do things. Tax the shit out of the big corporations that are bleeding the public. Would we ever do that here? No way, because of all the RepubliQ congresspersons and senators on the fossil fuel companies' payroll. But Britain is a democracy with a responsible government, and we have a fatally flawed republic with one party--the RepubliQ--that hates its citizens and will do anything to cling to power.
