California is Number One

My favorite road trip of the year:  driving to Anaheim to see the White Sox play their annual series with the Angels.   Whoever came up with the idea of playing baseball in Southern California was a genius  (it was Walter O'Malley).

There was quite a bit of opposition to the idea back in the late 1950s, and the stadia that the Giants and Dodgers wound up playing in were woefully inadequate. Neither city was all that thrilled with the expense and trouble of installing a true major league ballpark. In the City, that led to the ghastly mistake of Candlestick Park.

But the reality was that American culture and "center of gravity" was leaving the East Coast, where it had always been, and moving to California. That's where the action was--and still is.

I love going to day games to see the Padres in San Diego. Just another afternoon in paradise. Doesn't matter who they play, but last year, I watched them play the Giants.
