The deadly cost of Trump

When the Orange Thing was "elected," we all thought that he would do a lot of damage, but it would ultimately be repairable. That was before the pandemic hit.

We have as of this writing suffered 307,000 deaths from Covid. Many of those deaths could have been avoided with better leadership--a President who isn't a mentally ill crook--a better healthcare system, and no major political party that denies science and is perfectly willing to abandon ethics and decency to cling to power.

In other words, what if we were like Canada?

Answer: 180,000 US citizens would still be alive. Canada, a society very much like ours in all respects except the ones noted above, has suffered a Covid death rate of roughly 40% of that of the US. They've been exposed just as much as we have, but they have good and responsible leadership, universal health care, and very few right-wing nutjobs telling us to take off our masks and march in the streets to look for Black people to kill. Sanity, in other words.

If you voted for Trump, you are complicit in those 180,000 deaths. Think about it.

Great to see Kevin is still stuck on stupid!  You forgot to mention that the USA has 10 times the population of our neighbors to the north.  Minor detail.

Last stats that I can find shows the US death rate this year is lower than 2018.  Anyone have current numbers ?

Talk about stupid...I referred to a percentage. Canada has had a 40% RATE of deaths compared to the US, Not an absolute number--a percentage. DUHHHHHH!

God, you're a moron. If we had the same RATE OF DEATHS as that of Canada, we would have had 180,000 FEWER DEATHS. Got it, Trump-brain???

When comparing RATES OF DEATHS, the actual population of each country is irrelevant. Even a third grader would understand that, but you, being completely, irrevocably stuck on stupid, don't.

The death rate per 1,000 persons in the US has been steadily rising since 2008, when it bottomed out at 8.12 per 1,000. The projected death rate without Covid casualties was 8.88/1000 for 2020; now, you can add another 0.1 at least to that figure. 2018 was 8.685.

This screwed-up website doesn't let you post links any more for some reason, but you can find this info at www.macrotrends.net. We won't, obviously, have final current numbers for 2020 until well after the end of the year.

You got that "lower death rate than 2018" from a widely circulating Facebook post that is completely inaccurate and botched the math. For one thing, they ignored all deaths in January--but included January in the year to date! So effectively, they were saying no one died in January at all---which would indeed make the death rate lower!

It's truly amazing what a diarrheal fountain of misinformation Facebook really is.

BTW, rising death rates overall are not necessarily alarming. They could simply indicate an aging population.

Those were not facebook numbers, I looked at 4 different sites, but it seems nothing is current.  I am talking total deaths, no politics.  If someone has a non political site that would have real info on this I would like to see it.

Canada's leadership did not ridicule the medical community's recommendations for containing the disease....nor did they put somebody in charge of their health department whose unqualified opinion was to pursue a strategy of herd immunity.  Nor did they cite conspiracy theories to purposefully misinform their followers on social media.

Competent Leadership matters in a crisis.   Canada has it.   The US doesn't.    And now we'll get another trillion dollars of stimulous because of that.    Keep that in mind next time our board's fiscal-hawk hypocrites want to cry about food stamps and deficits.

I posted macrotrends.net as a possiblity. However, I cross-checked their info, and the numbers were the same on four other websites, including the US Census Bureau. So these numbers must be pretty widely available.

Another thing that Facebook poster got wrong is that he didn't count November or December deaths (since they hadn't happened yet) and extrapolated the existing death rate into those two months, which is a dumb error because those two months always have the highest death rates, pandemic or not. So he under-calculated 2020.

The only motivation that clown could possibly have had for posting that bullshit is that he's a coronavirus denier, a peculiar and offensive species that should be taken out and drowned.

I think Kevin maybe having his period! Tough day.

Whenever I see some guy using the state of being female as an insult, I think of one thing:

That guy must not have gotten laid in quite a while.
