I stopped watching a lot of the NBA years ago when the scoring picked up and the defense went in the tank.  All the soft calls and flagrant fouls turned me off.  But now that I'm watching this series, this is like a totally different season I see.  Lots of physical play with no fouls.  Looks like I completely undersold the grittiness of the Knicks.  

It often comes down to how tolerant the refs are. Some time ago, I saw the difference between regular season refereeing and playoffs refereeing. In the regular season, there were a LOT of fouls called, often, without any actual non-incidental physical contact. In the playoffs, there would have had to be blood drawn or broken bones for a foul to be called. For this reason, a team composed of hot shooters but weak defensively would always make it to the playoffs, but then, the strongest defensive teams would prevail, even if their shooting was mediocre. It was all about presenting the brand. During the regular season, high scoring sells. People would rather watch a 131-129 game than a 99-95 game. When the playoffs come around, though, the fans are more hardcore and more knowledgable, and they appreciate good, tough defense as much as sparkly offense.

Remember how the Spurs were during their ABA days and afterwards, when they joined the NBA? They would routinely score over 125 points a game--and only win about half the time. They were about as much about defense as the Harlem Globetrotters. They never did very well in the playoffs, on the rare occasions when they made it that far at all.

A group of OKC investors bought the Sonics and gave the locals 1 year from the sale date to finalize a new arena deal. This was actually 17 months by the time the other owners approved the deal. Not damn thing from Seattle. Now Seattle expects priority for an expansion team in an old remodeled area.  OKC is building a new one across the street from their present location.  90% funding from a sales tax extension.

The Thunder were able to avoid untimely injuries last year, not so in 26. No one in OKC is complaining. It happens.

The Spurs joined the NBA in 1976. I said they "never did well in the playoffs," not "never have done well." Thus, I was referring to a period in the past. This is a nuance of the English language that escaped Tom, but doesn't escape my third graders.

He has no business attending an already extremely crowded and busy venue and disrupting the experiences of spectators (who will have paid dearly to be there) as well as the game itself. Everything will slow to a crawl, or a complete stop, when his fat ass oozes into and out of the building. He will bring dozens of security thugs with him who will be itching to find an excuse to beat up brown people.

And before you bleat "TDS TDS TDS," let me add that I think it would be an equally bad idea for, say, Obama to attend the game. The Turd could stay home and watch the game live on closed-circuit in the comfort of his orifice while getting a handjob from Vance. He's only attending the game out of ego. He doesn't belong there.

Funding a new arena via a sales tax increase, or extension, or whatever you want to call it, is a terrible idea. A good rule of thumb is that a municipal tax should be paid by those who will benefit from it. EVERYBODY has to pay sales tax, but very few of them give a rat's ass whether the local NBA team gets a new stadium or not. In Seattle, they lost the Supersonics because the local voters didn't want to shoulder the additional expense. That's understandable. If that sentiment has changed, that's understandable as well. It should be decided, as I said, by those who are most affected.
