Candy, Abraham Lincoln realized that the true cost of the Civil War would go on for generations--thus, he founded the VA. But a century later, we didn't want to acknowledge a similar burden from the Vietnam and Korean wars. Remember Reagan's Happy Fun Sunshine Bunnies and Rainbows in America shtick? Caring for our vets didn't jive with that. So they were swept under the rug. Which helped to pay for all them shiny new GUNZ to rattle at them Rooskies.
Yay Ronny Raygun!
No, Kevin, I don't remember that about Reagan. I disagree with the notion that Vietnam and Korean War Veterans aren't cared for. In my career I had many patients from WWI, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, all of them. No it isn't the medical system that treated Vietnam Vets badly, it was US citizens protesting against our own soldiers, escalating the anti-war sentiment from protest to blaming our own guys (remember Hanoi Jane?). WWII vets returned to ticker tape parades and kisses (though they all suffered mentally also). Vietnam vets returned to boos and being spit on. They hated what they were made to do more than the politicians, who gave the flowery speeches etc. to keep it running longer. But I digress.
It really is important for everybody, if you encounter someone who served in the military, you can't do much, but you can say, in all earnest, "Thank you for your service." They really do appreciate it, because they didn't hear that very much, if at all, upon returning home. Again, I digress. Sorry.
