Mouth Breathers

From our paper today:

A mob in Madison, Wisconsin threw Molotov cocktails and toppled statues.  In the process they toppled, decapitated and dragged a statue of Hans Christian Heg into a lake.  Heg "spent time chasing away slave catchers in the 1850s before joining the Union Army.  He was a colonel in the civil war and died of wounds at Chickamauga, the highest ranking Union officer from Wisconsin to die in the Civil War."  Apparently someone thought enough of him to erect a statue in his honor.   After being admonished by the governor for this act, at least on protester said it was "a huge gain for the movement" and a "strategic political move."  The editorial writer asks "Is it too much to ask that protesters have some awarenesss of their targets, their own history?"

And that will be used by conservatives to discredit every single protestor and every single protest over the last month. It will be used to distract from and degrade the protestors' message. It will be used to obscure the calls for racial and social justice.

Trump is focusing on the goddamn statues because he wants to distract from his incompetence and blunders. Conservatives are focusing on the statues because they want to belittle the Black Lives Matter movement--you know, they're all violent thugs, Trump told us so. The editorial writer doesn't care about the statues--he just wants to demean the protestors (all of them--not just the ones in Madison. Note the use of the term "mob.")

And of course, our resident Trump slaves are doing their bidding. Let's depict them uppity Black folk as violent thugs! That way, we can continue to ignore the Black community's message.

I don't want to belittle the BLM movement, but actions speak louder than words.   Had that "spokesman" acknowledged that he was not aware of the abolitionist who worked to free slaves and fight against slavery, and regretted destroying the monument to someone who would have supported the BLM movement, I could think of it differently.

You can't speak for me, idiot. I never said that. Quit using the childish tactic of putting words in my mouth.

I'm not a Black person. However, I doubt very very much that any Black person who has progressed beyond grade school doesn't know who the abolitionists were or what they did. The thing is--they failed.

The protests aren't about slavery; they're about what has happened after slavery. Some misguided people pulling down a statue doesn't change that basic message.

And just for grins---did the person/government that put up that expensive statue think about giving the money to the local Black community instead? I mean, paeans and accolades are nice, but maybe, just maybe, the Black community is tired of symbolic gestures.
