Kevin Lewis inquires: "I wonder if DonDiego approves of the police actions that sparked the looting, here and elsewhere, and why he focuses on the latter but ignores the former."
Also from CBS : "The looting and protests stem after [sic] two police officers shot and killed 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr. in West Philadelphia on Monday. Police say Wallace walked towards the officers while holding a knife and refused to drop it He was shot 14 times and neither officer was carrying a taser, officials say."
If this is, indeed, what happened, poor old DonDiego would likely not disapprove of the "police actions" to which Kevin Lewis refers, . . . although 14 shots seems unnecessary. [On further thought, if poor old DonDiego were carrying and someone holding a knife approached him with apparent bad intentions, he might also empty his pistol, . . . just to be sure.]
If Kevin Lewis has evidence of police malfeasance, he should post the details so justice can be better served.
The incident you just described is a perfect example of police malfeasance. They didn't need to kill the man. If you or I were approached by such a person, the prudent thing would be to run away, even if we were armed with a bigly manly GUN.
The police, on the other hand, couldn't do that, but I refuse to believe that their only optiion was to riddle him with bullets. One shot to the leg, for example, would have ended the incident without killing. And for those who say it's impractical to try to administer a non-lethal wound, I would reply that police officers are supposed to be proficient with their weapons, and the man was only a few feet away. The option of Tasers has been mentioned, but apparently the police officers didn't have them.
I do not believe that shooting Wallace 14 times was the only option available to the officers. I also do not believe that they would have done that to a White suspect. I am certain that the officers will be exonerated after the usual inquiry, which I think is what really riles the protestors. It seems to them (whether or not it's true) that the police think the only way to deal with a threatening Black man is to execute him right then and there because, you know, their kind are so violent. The man was obviously more than a little bit nuts. He suffered from bipolar disorder and was on medications.
One might also consider that the police accounts of how such incidents went down often turn out to be somewhat divorced from reality. They are rarely if ever punished and the verdict of inquiries is usually "lethal force justified."
So I understand what led to the anger and the rioting. Do I approve of it? Of course not, though some assholes here have said that I do just because I won't condemn them as well as all the other protestors against cop-on-Black violence. Maybe the Black community would be more "peaceful" (docile, subservient) if they hadn't been treated like crap for 400 years. Just my liberal commie pinko socialist Deep State open borders tax the rich give Cadillacs to illegal immigrants shut down the economy point of view.
