So the 5th is only in place to protect guilty people, then why is this protection in place?
That isn't why it exists. And there are no guilty people DURING a trial, which is when it applies. It exists to protect the rights of the accused.
There's a perception among laymen that an innocent defendant should be eager to testify on his own behalf and therefore, anyone who takes the Fifth is probably guilty. That was the basis of Trump's idiot statement from 2016. However, that is absolutely incorrect. There are many situations where a defendant can't help his case by testifying--such as, no one's going to believe him--and he may hurt his case by exposing himself to cross-examination. In fact, Trump's current case is like that.
So for the Orange Pusbag, taking the Fifth is a smart move. I'm sure his lawyers had to force that down his throat, as much as he loves to talk.
