Officials have confirmed a migrant shelter will be built for 2,000 men on Randall’s Island’s youth soccer fields.
Construction of the housing means over 3,000 hours of recreation for both public and private school children, as well as adult sports leagues, would be canceled.
The city has limited athletic fields & this takes takes away from the youth. Now we have 2,000 unemployed men with nothin to do, who have not been vetted hanging around the few remaining fields.
Adams said the state would be “covering the costs” of the shelter’s construction, maintenance and staffing, although officials have yet to say how much that will be.
