The alt-right, Proud Boys, and Boogaloo inbred folks have infiltrated protests, set fire to and vandalized buildings and managed to turn the nation's attention to the violence they've caused and worse, made idiots like Fox News, Boiler and Stalker say that all the protestors are violent thugs--when it's hillbilly gun-toting white folks who are sowing the destruction and the protestors are almost all peaceful.
This made me think. Why do so many white folks hate Black people so very, very, very much? What fuels Stalker's racism, Boiler's lies, Trump's horrid inflammatory statements, and the white-hot hatred of Trump's howling, baying "base"? Why is racial inequality still so strong a force in this country?
I guess part of my confusion is that I simply don't understand why a person's color matters. I've known tens of thousands of people in my life, of all colors, races, ethnicities, cultural and national origins, sexual identities, tall, short, fat, thin...and the only thing that ever mattered to me was whether they were good people. As MLK said, the content of their character.
I have two good friends, both Black, who have recently retired. One was a supermarket manager and the other a defense attorney. Their professions and comfortable salaries put them near the top of the social food chain, as it were...but they both told me of being watched suspiciously by the cops and on multiple occasions, being pulled over for "driving while Black" in a White neighborhood. They also told me that in a thousand different small ways, they were treated and regarded differently than Whites, from the service they received at the bank to the way they received their educations.
I can't imagine what it must be like to be told, over and over and over and over, by the dominant White race, that you're second-class, inferior, and you have fewer rights. It's rarely so overt as cops killing unarmed Black men. It's usually subtle, like not getting hired or promoted, or getting a bank loan, or just being talked down to. That's why I'm sympathetic to the protestors. They've expressed bottled-up anger, and that anger existed long before this latest incident. We have to start actually BELIEVING and PRACTICING this "all men are created equal" stuff.
And Stalker, Boiler, and the rest of you, maybe you honestly can't control yourselves, but at least try to keep from repsonding to this post with the usual torrent of insults and racist propaganda. We truly don't need that right now. I know you love to start arguments, but just this once...go do something else. Please. There's enough violence out there right now; you don't need to bring your violence in here.
