Who should we listen to

There is some infighting amongst the Trump administration's pandemic team.  The pandemic expert on the team (and Medical doctor) thinks it is unwise to tout an unproven treatment for COVID-19 that might actually be dangerous.    The non-pandemic expert on the team (who is not a medical doctor) disagrees....oh, and he calls himself a doctor.

Can you guess which one the QA-Non-in-chief agrees with?

Its not uncommon for doctors to disagree.

Perhaps not, Mr Navarro, but you're not a doctor.   You dont even play one on TV.

And its unheard of for an economist to lecture a pandemic expert about pandemic medicine.

But then again this is the administration that believes they understand climate science better than climater scientists.    And thats who is in charge right now.

Navarro never claimed to be a doctor.  He is claiming that doctors have differing opinions on the safety of taking this 50 year old drug.  Does PJ argue that a non-doctor is unqualified to note that two doctors have differing opinions?  By the way, the drug has been tested with corona positive people and shown a 100% success rate.  The volume of testing is not what traditionally would be considered acceptable. 

Remember that doctors first told us to only wear N95 masks, and they've now changed their tune.  The reason being is that there isn't enough N95 masks to go around, and other masks provide some efficacy.  Apparantly non-doctors had to explain to the doctors that some efficacy is better than no efficacy.  Many doctors struggle to fully consider the changing dynamics of our situation, and regurgitate traditional concepts during a very nontraditional time.

We've already seen that not only does Trump not seek the advice of experts, he actively avoids them. The reason is, when he pulls something out of his ass and waves it around for the world to see, he wants fawning applause, not "wait, what??"

We're now seeing the active harm that a pathological narcissist leader can cause.

The ONLY reason anybody is talking about this new Trump-touted drug is that he wants to be a hero (and erase memories of his deadly incompetence), and he's prodding his lackeys to push for it.

This is a diversion of critical resources and time for what one could charitably call an extreme longshot.

But, but Kevin, Governor Cuomo was just on tv today stating that the Trump drug seems to be working!

And, and Dr Oz is actively prescribing it and many many others.

Hard to believe that Dr. Oz, a real doctor and Governor Cuomo would disagree with Kevin. I hope they are prepared for the wrath that Kevin will deliver. The media will be all over this...

I am guessing neither consulted him prior! Just a guess?

Many 'real doctors" are Trumpers.

I'm all in favor of this treatment IF IT WORKS, and by "works," I mean is shown to effectively treat Covid-19 in rigorous clinical trials. We're not even remotely close to that point yet.

Ordinarily, Trump's crowing about it would make as little difference as most of his boasting does. But here, there's the potential for active harm. The drug is used to treat a number of serious conditions, such as lupus. A Trump-fueled frenzy for the drug--buck-toothed MAGAheads holding up pharmaceutical delivery trucks with shotguns--would cost the lives of the people who already depend on the drug.
