No brainer. In Nevada, as pretty much everywhere I know, when you find lost property and can't locate the owner, you cannot keep it for yourself. You have to report it to the government. If the government also can't find the owner, it becomes the government's property.

Uncle Sam's revenue agents will want their cut should you fail to report.

'Unclaimed Property' is not the same as cash you found lying on the ground. In fact, if you read the body of your text, it doesn't even address cash found lying on the ground.

Unclaimed Property regulations are for checks and gift certificates and such that are issued by a company to another company or individual. This also includes credit balances on a customer's account. And payroll checks.

Cash you find lying on the ground is indeed property.

NRS 120A.113 “Property” defined. “Property” means tangible property described in NRS 120A.510 or a fixed and certain interest in intangible property that is held, issued or owed in the course of a holder’s business or by a government, governmental subdivision, agency or instrumentality, and all income or increments therefrom. The term includes, without limitation, property that is referred to as or evidenced by:

1. Money
or a check, draft, deposit, interest or dividend;

Money.

If you find a pile of cash on the ground in the Silver State and don't know who owns it, the law requires you to report your find to Carson City. As it should.
you forgot to bold the 'held issued or owed in the course of business part" which does not include lying on the ground. 99.9% of unclaimed property reported to a state government is checks that were issued some number of years (the number varies by state and whether it is an AP or Payroll check) and was not cashed. Furthermore, unclaimed property reporting is a requirement for busineses, NOT individuals.

If you want, this spring when I approve the next round of unclaimed property filing at my company, I could ask some of these states what their legal stance is on a pile of cash found lying on the ground
If I find $10,000 in cash I'm keeping it just to show Chilcoot.

If I find $10,000 in cash I'm not telling Chilcoot.

You're right. And none of this "if" crap. Next time I find $10,000 in cash, I'm keeping it and not telling Chilcoot.

I agree and I'm not saying when I find that much cash lying around.
What a coinky dink!

Just a few minutes ago, I was out shopping and found some cash! This conversation must have brought me good luck!

Anyway, I decided to do the "right thing" and called the local police. They were not happy that I insisted on turning it in to them in case someone reported it lost or missing.

Sheesh, what an attitude. I could have kept that quarter, and spent it on, ummm..... well, maybe I could have spent it, or at least played a slot or VP, ummmm......wait, we ain't got no coin droppers in Florida, well, maybe I could get a cup of ummm.... OK, so I'll use it to tip the.....nope, I don't want her spitting in my food, so maybe I'll use it for ummm....errrr..... sheesh, I could not even buy a pack of gum with it!

Seriously..... what can a person do with a single quarter other than swallow it or put it somewhere for a proctologist to find?

Because we all know what we would do it it were a significant amount of money.

I'm happy for you that you did the right thing.

But talk about coinky dinks. I lost a quarter in Florida last year. And yeah, you're right, the police were not very helpful when I reported it missing.

I don't know why you would turn it into the Gov't? I always thought you would return it to the police, and if no one claimed it after 30 days, it becomes your property. So what you should do is turn it into the police, BUT, put your ID in the wallet.
