Baby boomer retirement goals...

8 more weeks to go, and I am almost counting the minutes. Hubby is 65 and we just came home from a terrific 8 day trip to Vegas. Upon returning, he received a call from a work buddy, who let him know that he had just been diagnosed with Bladder cancer. This has hit my husband hard, and he has been doing a lot of thinking about our future. He really wants to take a trip across country to see all the things he has always wanted to see. I, on the other hand, had planned to do some small trips this year, just settling into the retirement game, and planning a really huge trip for next year. I think it has really hit him that life can change in a moment's notice, and he wants to do it now.

Looks like I will be looking over some itineraries to make this happen. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your stories.

They let you fish off the cruise ship? That's pretty cool. Carnival?

You should have seen the looks I got when I started bow fishing off the ship :>) during my cruise last week.

All kidding aside It looks like Carnival has really stepped up to the plate for the gamblers. I won't go into a dissertation on it but I will say we received $1000.00 in cash just for taking the cruise. We received gifts every night courtesy of the casino, things like embroidered beach towels, a free steakhouse meal with two bottles of wine, strawberries and champagne, free drinks in the casino and last but not least a free inside cabin on any cruise between 5 and 8 days as long as we sail before 6/30/2014.

The thing is we rarely bet higher than $20.00 a hand and yet we received all of these perks.

I know a lot of people don't like Carnival but it works for my wife and I.

Is it because of resort fees?

No, it's because I work a shitty, thankless, low-paying job with very few benefits (I'm a "Joe Punchclock", a "blue-collar bumpkin" or a "working-class knuckledragger"...take your pick). I suppose I shouldn't complain too much though I guess...At least I'm able to take a trip to Las Vegas once a year.

I'll prob'ly be dead before I'm 67 anyways.

I don't know your situation but if you truly despise your job you need to find another one. I know that is easy to say and usually a real mofo to do. The reason I say that is because a job is such a huge part of your life, to dislike or hate is as much as you sound like you do is a bad place to be.

Life is way too short to be miserable one third of it (a 40 hour work week).

Speaking from experience, if you love your job you will never work a day in your life.

Establish a plan, even if it is a long term plan, to find a job you at least like. Your life will be much better for it.

Double post deleted.

Yep. Easier said than done.

Besides that if I were to be lucky enough to find something else it would be for lower pay and I'd likely have to work a whole year before I'd even get one week of vacation. I currently get three weeks at my present job. Surprised they have not taken away vacation time from us yet. We used to get four sick days per year, those went away. We also used to get the Friday after Thanksgiving off as a paid holiday, that also went bye-bye. Let me tell you people were NOT happy. By taking away things like that all that does is lower company morale and gives people less incentive to do a good job.

I still have hopes & dreams that I'll win the PowerBall or the MegaBucks jackpot someday.

You can also hope and dream that the day Obama leaves the office he's made a mockery of, that's the day your light should begin to shine brighter, like it will for the vast majority of Americans and probably, the entire human race. Even if Hillary gets in, in a "turnabout's fair play" move, she'll have her mind set on getting some young dude to go under the Oval Office desk and start chomping on her, just as her moronic hubby did. That ought to be enough to pave the way for patriotic Republicans to set this country straight, finally. No one deserves to have their sick days and a co. holiday stripped from them, but that's being done at numerous companies because of stale programs like Obamacare and the ever-expanding food stamp fiesta. You want to find those stolen sick days and that lost holiday? Go into any big city ghetto where no one wants or needs to work anymore. That's where you'll find them being toyed with.

I absolutly KNOW whre you are!
I was stuck in a low paying job for 2 decades and was too afraid to move out of there.
The "Straw that broke the camals bacK' happened when I was being pressured by my Nazi boss to do some unusual taskes.
I found out how EVIL he was and finally got him out of there,ONE month B-4 I bailed out.
He got a re location notice.
I had to retire 3 years early because of 3 hernias and plantar faciatis.
I always said to my co workers that I would retire when I got hurt.
Consider that as a good thing.
3 months of healing and I was ready.
I signed the papers and proceded to GET OUT!
Wall Mart and Sam's Club was hiring "greeters".
Take that job over mine? Yes.

It takes a lot of courage to bail out or change jobs at a late age.
I didn't have it.
I chose to retire and live on SS and other money sources.
Downsizing is a great plan....More stress,however.

One retiree sold their house and moved into a "trailer" ..Works for them.
Sold one of 2 cars.

I still have my small car and my big house. And toys and a LOT of hobbies.
Never am I bored.EVER.

I'll make it past 70,if I keep busy and not be a blob on the couch.
4 diet changes in 6 years.

Shit job? Yes.
Not anymore.

Too many sleepless nights? Not anymore.
Stress? Nope.

Happy? Totally.
I'm just 62 and still a kid,inside.

Amblulatory,functional,aware,sighted,busy,happy.
