Breaking News: Ex LAPD Cop barricaded in cabin

Jim & Karen Reynolds (a couple, not maids) did a radio interview today describing how it all unfolded. They said they are long term renters of that unit. They hadn't been at the property since Jan 29 and returned that day. When they entered the living room, Dorner came out from a back room pointing a gun at them and reassuring them that he would not kill them. Karen became hysterical and ran down a stair case. Dorner ran after Karen and brought her back and tied them up. They said Dorner talked about the boat owner in San Diego who he didn't kill as well. They said Dorner put towels in their mouths and pillow cases over their heads. Jim said the zip tie was so tight it cut off circulation in his hands. When asked about the reward they said they didn't feel entitled to the money.

Surely you're not suggesting that we should have to pay a reward everytime someone reports a criminal's whereabouts to police, are you?

Uh, There was a posted reward for this case. Should they have put all of the disclaimers on the reward, stating that if you only led the police to the criminal but the criminal isn't captured and convicted, that you won't receive the reward?

If a reward is offered and someone leads the police to the criminal, then the answer is a HUGE YES they should receive the reward.
What they are saying right now on TV, is that the LA Mayor said the reward would be paid for his CAPTURE! Since he wasn't "captured" there may not be any reward.

There is building outrage about this. I predict there will be a payout. The L.A. Mayor is the biggest lightweight I've ever seen, so I don't really pay attention to him. I believe his news conference was specifically for the reason that the public is getting upset about this.

Meanwhile, while everyone is worried about who gets what and why, the original victims are trying to get on with their lives. Maybe the money should go to these people, after all they have suffered he greatest loss.
drmilled makes a very good point.

Those words actually came out of the mayor's mouth? It could be true, but color me skeptical.

If no government officials have gone on the record about this, it is a bunch of outrage over...a rumor. As usual.
I believe that the offer was written - not verbal.

I don't have a prediction about whether any reward will be paid. I'm talking about what's good public policy. In these circumstances, I don't believe it would be good public policy to pay this reward. The reward didn't contribute to Dorner's end in any way, and so it shouldn't be paid.

I do, however, think it's wrong to condition the reward on capture and refuse to pay it if the fugitive is killed. Why should the tipster not get the reward if the surrounded fugitive decides to kill himself rather than surrender? Makes no sense.

Well you once again appear to want to be argumentative when your argument has basically been shown to be absurd.

Let's say a neighbor watches Dorner breaking into a cabin and calls the cops and the same thing happens. Under your premise there should be no reward. Mind you this isn't your reward money, but others who put it up. Your argument makes absolutely no sense and thank God once again, most strongly disagree with you.
