And everyone is making money except the kids that are actually playing the games.

They get a scholarship, room, board, medical & tutoring; worth about $50k per year

Looks like Northwestern is going to change that "not getting paid" subject!

Tax experts are saying that if they were to get paid, then the scholarship and other benefits would become taxable.

This is a preliminary ruling, does not affect state schools and it could take several years to work thru the appeals process

Northwestern's University President said they would likely drop Division 1 football before they pay athletes. If you ever watched a Northwestern game on TV they would be lucky to get more than 30,000 fans for some games. There currently is somewhere near 120 FBS NCAA Div. 1 teams. Likely less than half would survive this blow. Too bad there wasn't a viable "farm system" like major league baseball for the NFL. Many of these kids don't belong in college but should still get an opportunity based on athletic talent. Maybe the NFL should fork over some cash to set up a minor league system.
As you sports fans might have guess, I'm a Purdue grad. We couldn't make the NCAA tournament, the NIT, nor the CBT. Ouch!

We need Robbie Hummel back!
A discussion I was listening to on the radio - which I believe included a law professor - indicated the motive for unionizing the student athletes DIDN'T include actually "paying" them. He felt their focus was more related to having a voice at the table when topics like "medical benefits" for student atheletes were discussed; specifically injured players and continuing care.

Maybe another topic would be the inclusion of a mandatory spring game like they have at Wisconsin. A players union may take issue with that for one reason or another. Right now, I don't think the athletes themselves have a say or not in that additional committment.

The matter rests on the decision of whether they are students or whether they are employees, the latter possible because their efforts result in financial gain for the institution.

I think if you actually cut them a check for "playing football", their amateur status would be affected the way the system works today - which would lead to a whole 'nother court case I would guess.
