Copenhagen Zoo Euthanizes Healthy Giraffe

For population control, and to avoid inbreeding. Seems like there had to be better options.

Story here.
I saw that article and remember thinking that's really gonnnam piss off the PETA folks, especially the feeding him to the lions part, YUM.
Not to mention that they did it in front of school children! How sick is that?
It's not sick at all! Have you ever heard of the circle of life? My kids have seen enough killing of farm animals, deer, Ducks, etc, so they do not need therapy if they see a dead cat beside the road. My daughter especially is not happy at slaughter time mind you, but they understand what and why it has to happen.
Zoo keepers do not take this kind of thing lightly, they did not just wake up one day and say "hey, lets kill a giraffe and feed it to the lions". They have a special attachment to those animals and I am sure it was handled correctly!
In my humble opinion it would have been a bigger issue if they wasted the meat and killed the giraffe and then buried the carcass or burned it or whatever.

^^^^Excellent post weggie44^^^^
Couldn't they have neutered him?
True Weggie and I agree somewhat but you also have to keep in mind that most visitors to a zoo are city folks who outside of cats and dogs, have never seen any other animals.

The zoo didn't breed the giraffe to feed it to the lions. Lions can eat bovine or ovine like the rest of us.

Yea, but why waste it? I doubt it would've looked good as the daily special in the cafeteria either

They shouldn't waste the meat but they didn't raise the giraffe to feed to the lions. Why did they breed the giraffe to start with if they didn't want it or had no room for it?
