DA DUM! DA DUM! DUM DA DUM DA DUM DA!!!!

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!! And just in time for the July 4th holiday! On our news tonight there is a report of great white sharks swimming off the La Jolla, CA coastline, and pretty close to shore....they've closed the beaches. And just a little later on the news, great whites have been seen swimming off the coast of Boston waters! Just what you want to hear when you're preparing to go on vacation to either one of those beaches.

It was only about 1.5 years ago that a guy swimming with a bunch of marathon swimmers off the Enciinitas, CA beach, got bit in the legs by a great white and died when it severed one of his main arteries before they could get him to the beach and paramedics. That same suspected great white headed for La Jolla before they lost track of him. La Jolla has all those seals in the water there and they are good eating as far as great whites are concerned. They don't bother to differentiate between man and seals! There goes my swimming for the holidays as these sharks just don't stay in one area, and can travel 50 miles or so overnight!
Most sharks are totally harmless.
But Great White - get out of the way - you are just a pretzel!
I have dived with a lot of sharks on Red Sea reefs and Great Barrier reef.
Most of them you can hang onto their dorsal and go for a ride.
But Great Whites and Tigers - get out of the water - they WILL wreck your whole day!

I thought it was the theme from Dragnet.

Shhhh. Jack Webb was actually a shark impersonating an LAPD detective. This was top secret, why are you exposing it?

I've never been attacked (knock on wood) but I see sharks while surfing all the time and it scares the crap out of me. The closest to death once happened to me out at Diamond Head in Hawaii. I was sitting on my board waiting for a wave set during the lull between sets, true story by the way. It was a good day with wave heights around 4' to 8'. The waves tend to break further out the bigger the waves gets so I was further out than normal. Just by chance the yellow colored Honolulu fire dept (HFD) helicopter flew by but made an abrupt u-turn and hoovered about 30 feet directly above me. The co-pilot hand-gestured something to me, I waved back thinking he was saying hello. The pilot then turned on his loud speaker and said, "There is a large tiger shark right next to you!" I nearly crapped in my pants. I paddled in as fast as I could. Later I realized that the co-pilot was trying to alert me of the shark by holding his hand up as if to resemble the fin of the shark. I am forever grateful to the HFD for taking the time to make that u-turn for they could have easily continued on their way and I would have been a goner.
Boy that must have been scary! Glad you were OK!

Hard to comprehend all the ways government can help us.

That's a good story surf87, thanks for sharing it.

Holy Sh!t! Glad you made it ok.
My father was into competive skin diving when I was a kid. Practically spent most of my life up and down the California coast waiting for my dad to come in either while he was out scouting spots for a competition or actually while he competed. This was back in the sixties and my dad was well known years after her stopped competing. Anyway my dads diving partner and good friend went off the coast on a boat with some other divers and broke a cardinal rule of diving. Never ever attach your catch to your belt. Won't ever know what made him do it cause a shark got him and he bled to death before they could get to shore. That happened in the early 70's about the time that Jaws came out. My dad actually got the bright idea to turn me into his diving partner. Now granted I'm a strong swimmer had my life guard license at that time. He had me a custom wet suit made. Took me to Catalina. I jumped in that clear water and took one look got back on that boat and never dove again. No great whites in there but 3 very lovely nurse sharks which can and will bite.
