I was sitting on my board waiting for a wave set during the lull between sets, true story by the way. It was a good day with wave heights around 4' to 8'. The waves tend to break further out the bigger the waves gets so I was further out than normal. Just by chance the yellow colored Honolulu fire dept (HFD) helicopter flew by but made an abrupt u-turn and hoovered about 30 feet directly above me. The co-pilot hand-gestured something to me, I waved back thinking he was saying hello. The pilot then turned on his loud speaker and said, "There is a large tiger shark right next to you!" I nearly crapped in my pants. I paddled in as fast as I could. Later I realized that the co-pilot was trying to alert me of the shark by holding his hand up as if to resemble the fin of the shark. I am forever grateful to the HFD for taking the time to make that u-turn for they could have easily continued on their way and I would have been a goner.
OMG!!! Glad they turned to get your attention! Really frightening!
