I've known two "Doomsdayers" ( the term didn't exist back then), they were both co-workers and friends. They didn't know each other, I knew them twenty years apart. They were both good guys, and I spent recreational time outside of work with both. Both were smart, well educated (not the same thing), very good engineers, husbands, fathers, and friends. One guy was from The U.P. of Michigan, the other was from Utah, very different in some ways, but very much the same in their belief that the world would fall apart or end in their lifetimes.
Every morning I walk into work and say good morning, how ya doing, hey. Except for these guys, I would say "sorry man, maybe tomorrow". It actually changed my way of looking at things, these guys helped me appreciate every day. Even on the worst days; Bears lost, wife pissed, kid cranky, 4 hour meeting, snow storm, Mom sick, Bears lost, Republican President, broken sink, Bears lost (yes, lots of those days). I still smiled because I loved;
The Bears
My wife
My kid
My job
Snow
My Mom
America
My home
Not in that order.
I was just giving a friendly jab to my "doomsdayer" friends, just a laugh. It turned out to be more, it became a much needed reminder of how blessed I was. I don't work with either of those guys anymore, but I try to think of them when things get rough. A bad day for doomsdayers is a good day for Earth.
Sorry DD, maybe tomorrow.
