A beat up car, a bunch of kids and a "wife" is a dead give-away. A really old con.
Here's one with a twist. At a fast food place a 'friendly' couple in matching Tee shirts (neon green) opened the door for us. Assummed they were employees, extending customer service, etc., (though no logo on the shirts). As we were leaving a, similarly dressed pair opened the door for us to exit. Then, a nicely attired female approached and struck up a friendly conversation as we walked to the car (we were parked close to the door), are y'all having a fun day? how about this weather? etc., keeping up the chatter then asked for "a few dollars to spare", needed gas to pick up her child from school. Probably should have gone back in and reported this to the manager.
At the Reno airport waiting for the hotel shuttle, we all had our luggage with us. A guy tried to walk off with one of our groups' suitcase. When the man said "no that is mine", the would-be thief dropped the suitcase and took off running. Security pursued, don't know if they ever caught up with the scoundrel.
