Favorite mob movie?

The Godfather 1 and 2 were based on a novel. There were some things in the novel that were based in fact (like Johnny Fontaine as a loosely disguised Frank Sinatra character) but the novel is not about a real person or family with just the names changed

Primary Colors (1998)
I'll add two more. Bugsy, and that one with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman...forget the name of it. More of an Irish mob movie. The photographer in the movie was also a contract killer.

True. It has been claimed that the Corleone family was "loosely based" on the Genovese crime family, but that is an almost meaningless assertion.

It's almost too obvious to mention that Moe Green and Hyman Roth are based on Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. The Vegas references and Havana scenes easily connect those dots. The character's names were derived from Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum and Arnold Rothstein. (Also, in Godfather II, Roth claims that Green "invented" Las Vegas -- which is a an absurd real-life distinction still erroneously assigned to Bugsy Siegel.)

To my knowledge, Arnold Rothstein is also the only real gangster even mentioned in the films. Hyman Roth references him during a conversation with Michael in Godfather II.
The Louie's restaurant, the scene of Michael's shootout was based on Louie's restaurant in the Bronx in the neighborhood where Mario Puzo lived. It is still there
