He stopped loving her today

Ole George was a great country singer with a lot of hits that's for sure. But according to Billboard he wasn't the top hit maker. Your news report had that one wrong Sue. Eddie Arnold had 92 top ten hits, George Strait 84 and George Jones 78. George Strait leads the pact with 44 number ones.

Rock & roll wise its Elvis with 80 top tens and Michael with a distant 37 next. Elvis holds the record with overall sales of well over one billion records worldwide.
I've had the privilige of knowing George for better than 25 years...there was no better person. He had a great sense of humor and a great memory.
Two years ago he came by my Christmas light display and told me I had finally won as the biggest in Williamson County (we had been in friendly competition for many years). I found out later that he had decided to end his display due to neighbors complaints about traffic (his wife later told me it was because he was getting too old).
I really miss him.
Ole George was my companion on many a long road trip. In my car is a much played CD of his hits. What is there about sad country songs and lonely roads, they just seem to go together? Perhaps my favorite sing along crying-in-your-beer-song is the more than 30 year old hit "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me Her Memory Will."
I'm much more of a Rock fan and certifiable Beatlemaniac. George Jones and Johnny Cash broke down the walls for me though.

Country Music lost it's last great singer other than maybe Willie. Nobody will fill his shoes. My favorite song was "Bartender's Blues." So Long George. R.I.P.
