As long as he never bet against his team, I have no problem with it. He played the game the right way and he should be the arbiter of any "unwritten rules" debates.
DonDiego has no problem with it either. It does seem appropriate that any man with the nickname "Charlie Hustle" and the statistics he put up should be in the Hall of Fame.
But that he is not in the hall of fame has nothing to do with "unwritten rules".
"Major League Baseball, Rule 21 Misconduct
Section(d) BETTING ON BALL GAMES.
Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year.
Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible."
The investigation of Mr. Rose's gambling concluded when he agreed to accepted a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti. Mr. Rose was declared permanently ineligible.
The Baseball Hall of Fame and Major League Baseball are two separate organizations. But the Hall of Fame rules state that no one on the MLB ineligible list can be inducted into the Hall.
