When you think about it not many people would take the time to sit down and write reviews of 40 places over the course of a year for nothing. Maybe one or two that they really liked or disliked but that is it.

If somebody wants to hype their own businesses or screw the competition and they take the time to post 40 other reviews over the span of a year, they got me.

Edited to add: I saw a standup comic say this the other night. "I post pictures of food I make at home on Yelp restaurant reviews 'white toast with peanut butter served on a paper towel was not very good'".

Nope. I specifically used the term "Yelp Fanatic" for a reason. Their are people that live for that shit, I know some. If you look at a posters profile you can tell if they're real, it's equally easy to spot the paid shills, just use common sense.

BTW reply to posts beneath the quoted post please.

The professional cheaters are hard to spot trust me. I don't doubt there are a few fanatics that foolishly give it away for free, but in the small towns and cities I work a restaurant that has been in business for 5 years might have three reviews usually all of them are bad because the only people that write reviews in these small markets are people that had a bad experience. Somebody that is writing 40 reviews a year on Yelp for restaurants in the same market could start their own foodie blog and easily bring in 10k-20k a year for doing the same thing they are already doing.

I worked with a Chinese buffet once that had been in operation for 7-8 years. In that time span they had gone through three ownership changes, the restaurant had been closed for a year, the building had completely burned down and been rebuilt yet all the negative reviews were from prior owners and in the prior building. What's funny of the five negative reviews they had three of them went something like this

"I arrived at 3:30 in the afternoon on a weekday and the food on the buffet wasn't fresh."

Please shoot yourself in the head if you don't know when to eat at a buffet.

Just thought I'd add right now I am writing fake reviews for cam girls. It is one of the better review gigs I have ever had.

First, thanks for the under quote response.

I completely agree on the Chinese buffet stupidity. There is a very good one by my house that let's me fill up a to go container for $5 before 4:15. The stuff is 3 hours old but well worth $5.

On the Yelp thing, I know two Yelp fanatics and trust me, no one would go to their food blog. They review everything, attorneys, dry cleaners, landscapers, wedding photographers, I find it bizzare. They talk about the "Yelp community", they correspond every day, have meetups, the whole online community deal. It's not that different than this place, people that are glued to LVA FFA all day everyday, I think that is messed up, but it seems to make them happy.

I talked with one Yelp fanatic about LVA and she couldn't believe that people had ten's of thousands of posts on a Vegas board. I see her point, at least the Yelpers believe, right or wrong, they are helping people.

I find it easy to pick out the shills v the real Yelpers, they do to. Just like spammers that show up here now and then. I understand that some dim wits will believe anything they read on the internet, but you don't need to be a genius to use Yelp successfully. I've had nothing but good luck following the advise given by SELECTED reviewers.

If they do a lot of restaurant reviews you ought to talk to them about setting up their own foodie blog. Startup costs and ongoing costs are less than $200 a year. If they are in a market that doesn't have a lot of completion they could make a mint. Getting people to come to the blog is easy if they are as socially engaged as you say they just work FaceBook to get their traffic flowing. Money comes from the ads they sell to the resuturants. A great extra income for somebody that is already doing it.

The LVA message boards have helped many people over the years. I know of a marriage a divorce a long term relationship and many ongoing and real friendships that sprang from the FFA.....

There's been a ton of great Vegas advice over the years....and it continues to dribble in.

Then, there's the friendly political discussions that have been truly thought provoking with many real world demonstrations of how we can use the power of persuasion to convince others to adjust their thinking.

Yelp...pfffft. I'll take a westie trip report over a Yelp review any day.

The FFA helped make a divorce happen? That is rich. LMFAO.

It was a regular Peyton Place. And no. I don't mean Mile High.

Amen to this.

In its hey day, this was the place to visit for all things Vegas. ... GregRio (RIP) was the most knowledgeable poster imaginable about entertainment, too. He was the Westie of entertainment.

I learned about Rosemary's, Milo's, Sterling Brunch. Tips for how to land free upgrades with rooms. ... Learned when Phantom of the Opera would begin selling tickets to the hour and ended up with front row seats. I learned how to play video poker the right way.

Became good friends with so many people. Most have moved on for various reasons. ... Even officiated the wedding of former LVA participants in Las Vegas two months ago.

I used to get great info from this place and still enjoy some content like trip reports. My point was the amount of time spent on, and level of dedication to any online community. Whether it's LVA, Yelp, Twitter, Facebook or any other web based distraction. The people I know that are Yelp fanatics think they are doing good work, so do some people here, it's all good for you if it makes you happy. Just not my cup of tea.

I give that cup of tea 3.5 stars.

That review was brought to you by Lipton, the king of teas.

And by Lipton, I mean, "my own personal opinion". So drink Lipton Tea.
