My Online Petition

I have mixed emotions about this, but if the fee as quite transparent prior to booking a room then I don't want the government getting involved.

We shouldn't!

But we should care if consumers are given the "bait" of a $100 price, and then get "switched" to a $130 price one or two clicks later, typically in much smaller print. It's deceptive, and it puts the more ethical hotel advertising the $130 price up front at a disadvantage.

Are the resort fees taxed? I wonder if a $130 room plus taxes would cost more than $100 room with a $30 resort fee.

I would guess that most readers of this forum are well aware of resort fees in Las Vegas and adjust their plans accordingly. I would agree that resort fees are a surprise to Vegas rookies or occasional visitors.

I'm guessing that the Resort Fee is only a means so that casinos can offer a lower room rate,
thus making it sound more attractive and reasonable.

If Resort Fees could not be added, I would assume that the casinos at that point
would just add (hide) that "fee" into an increased room rate.

In the February 2014 issue of the Las Vegas Advisor, there's a piece which mentions that the Federal Trade Commission is looking into the legality of Resort Fees and that they are working with the Bureau of Consumer Protection and so an outright ban on them could be in the pipeline.

On other advantage the casinos have in adding the Resort Fee after you book a room is that it cuts down on the commission they have to pay the online sites for booking the room. Priceline, and all the other online sites, do not get paid for this fee since it's tacked on at the end. Some hotels cut their costs by as much as 50%. If any group should be upset by this, it should be them.
