Really? A win?

" The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that taxes are due for Social Security and Medicare on severance packages paid to workers laid off involuntarily.

In a win for the Obama administration, the court voted 8-0, with Justice Elena Kagan recused, that Quality Stores Inc., a defunct retailer and its employees, are not entitled to tax refunds totaling about $1 million. "

The arguement

I think it's BS to tax people who just got thrown out of their jobs, especially with todays unemployment woes.Good job Obama, YOU WON, you(I know)get to keep more of the now unemployed's money
Paychecks get taxed. Severence packages are essentially paychecks. I fail to see the problem. I fail to even understand how it made its way into court...it seems pretty obvious to me.

When the airline I used to work for went under I paid taxes on my severance pay..and my remaining vacation pay...and on the subsequent unemployment checks I got from the government.

I would have preferred to not pay taxes. I'd love to not pay taxes now. But the government needs money to operate. Even our resident conservatives agree...Remember how upset they got when we had to close the monuments in Washington? Ooooo, that was ugly.
This has the potential of being another 200 post thread

Oh yea, I know,I'm aware that they have always been taxed but the issue is in the tax code.

"One part of the tax code defines wages as "all remuneration for employment." The severance payments made by Quality Stores were wages and were taxable for FICA purposes, the Obama administration is arguing, according to court filings.

But in a different section of the code, "supplemental unemployment benefits" are exempted from income taxes. Quality Stores has argued that its severance payments are exempt from FICA taxes according to the "SUB payments" definition."

I"m only saying that it seems people should be able to keep their entire severance pay ,after all that may be the last pay they receive for quite sometime. The sentence that stated it was a win for the Obama admin. seemed contradictory to me, If I were a sitting pres. I sure as hell wouldn't want that attributed to my name( a supreme court win for more taxation)

Thanks Obama

Did Obama write the article? I thought it was CNBC.
I think its only fair that this is called a "win" for the Obama Administration. They litigated in favor of it and they won. It's about time this sitting President of 5.5 years starts getting "credit" for something other than ObamaCare.

Now it they would only get "credit" for Benghazi, the IRS scandals, snooping on reporters / the public at large, fast and furious, and the deterioration of the US as a super power, we might be getting somewhere.

I might be asking for too much.....

Didn't take too long for a Benghazi or IRS remark.

How long till a comment on his birth certificate ?

Has anyone figured what this is really about?

It is all about the TAKERS...and the makers.

The average citizen works hard at his or her job to "make".

The Government "TAKES" whatever they want to payoff all their voters, govt employee voters, and the lavish lifestyle of the president and others.

At what point will the makers wake up?

How long before the takers outnumber the makers?

It has almost hit the fan, not yet, but we are getting close.
As Margaret Thatcher said about Socialism ( and that is what the Obama platform is), " the only thing wrong with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money".
