RENO, ever been there?

Yeah, they have remodeled the hotel fairly recently. I read quite a few of the more recent reviews and I think the place will be quite adequate for us. Just our last pit stop before driving back to Portland.

I am staying at the Western Village in Sparks, as the last stop of a week-long road trip with my kids. I wanted to be away from downtown, and it was a heckuva lot cheaper but still had good reviews. I'll be there the end of the first full week of July. This is after spending a night in Salt Lake, three nights in Denver, and a night in Brigham City, Utah. Leaving and returning to Portland.

Stayed in the Nugget a couple years ago, for one night. If you are someone who likes the look and feel of the downtown Vegas hotels, you will be fine in Reno. If you are expecting the Bellagio you're in the wrong city.

I hope you don't regret staying at the Western Village, unless things have changed a lot in the past few years, that place is a total dump.

I'm not sure if anythings been remodeled, but the casino is a blue-collar locals place with low ceilings and very smokey and the rooms were worse than a Motel 6.

Actually, I did a bit more looking and decided to just nut up and spend another $60 to stay at the Grand Sierra that night. Thanks Erin

Nice move. Back in the day, the Grand Sierra (When it was the MGM) was the toast of Reno. Like the MGM in Vegas at the time, it boasted a Grand Jai Alai Fronton....also 7 restaurants and 19 bars. Those were the days. Good Luck & Have Fun!
My very first casino gambling experience was in Reno. It was 1971, I was 22 years old, fresh out of the service and was driving a semi for a living. I just got paid and had $270 in my pocket. The first bet I made was roulette, one dollar on Black 20, It landed on black 20. In one hour's time I left the casino broke and was driving down the highway talking to myself.

I've been back to many casino's since that time, to recoup that $270. Yes, I'm still talking to myself as I leave the casinos.

The Reno/Sparks/Carson City/Tahoe region has a lot going for it, but it's a whole different scene from Vegas.

If you know how to look, there is are some very good dining options. I've enjoyed many good meals at places like 4th Street Bistro and Romanza.

The gambling can be had for cheap at all of the nicest places in town. You won't have any trouble finding a $3 or $5 dice table, and blackjack can usually be found for $5 as well.

The room I had at the Peppermill the last time I stayed there was easily the nicest room I've ever had anywhere, including the places I've stayed in Vegas (better than Bellagio, Venetian, and MGM Grand)

Sorry you didn't check it out - maybe some other time.

I used to go to the Jai Alai games with my parents. It was a huge fronton, but there was never anyone there. I still have a cesta from one of the players.

Good call, especially with the kids. The Grand Sierra has a ton of stuff for the kiddo's, bowling, movie theater, decent pool, arcades etc..., not that you'll be there that long, but it will be way better than the Western Village.

For an adult trip I'm partial to the Peppermill. I love their Tuscany Tower and the spa is awesome. I'm headed there this Thursday, then up to Tahoe for a B-day party over the weekend. I will also be back in August for Hot August Nights.

Peppermill does have the nicest rooms in Reno (Tuscany Tower). Even their remodeled tower rooms are decent (the bathrooms kind of suck though, shower/tub combo).

I think Reno has a lot of good dining options. At the Peppermill, their Steakhouse is very good and for a more casual type of place I enjoy Biscotti's. You also can't beat their cafe, it's the same as the one in Vegas, including the Fireside lounge. Great breakfast/hangover food!
