Southpoint help

Will be celebrating 40th anniversary and staying at the Southpoint first time. I would appreciate comments from readers about the casino action and the experience of staying there. I recall seeing comments that a lot of locals play there, and that causes me to consider they may have machines with good pays in VP, etc.I have requested a city view room which will be a little extra, but hopefully worth it. All comments welcome !!
Thanks
They have a ton of VP machines - all with great pay schedules - but not 100%+. The rooms are nice - good size.
Southpoint does have some good gambling and a different variety of restaurants. You will get a very worth fun book. Downside is that you are far from anything else- so I would suggest a rental car....other than that, southpoint has it all.
Don't miss out on getting an all beef hotdog from the hot dog cart in the sports book. If you sit in the race book, you can get free drinks for your hot dog.

They had a great happy hour throughout the whole casino, where drinks were $2.

I've heard they did away with this.
Five or so years ago the deli on the south side of the gambling floor had great sandwiches.
Good gambling. Good rooms. Good restaurants and the liquor in the gift shop is as cheap as you'll find in the city.

There is decent VP and lots of table games with reasonable mins.

The king rooms have a sitting alcove like the Orleans and Suncoast. Unfortunately the queen rooms don't. Bathrooms are not tiny.

Restaurant lineup is great. The Silverado Steakhouse is nice and will not disappoint. Primarily Prime Rib gives you a good slab at decent price. The Italian place is also good. Haven't eaten at the Mexican joint, but my local buddy says they like it. The sandwich place isn't cheap, but the portions are large. Last, but not least is Michaels. For years it was the "splurge" place in town at the Barbary Coast whenit's namesake Michael Gaughn ran the Coast casinos. Now that he owns the SP, it has relocated there. For a 40th anniversary, you might consider it as a surprise. I'm sure they a dress code, so you might investigate if interested.

As to the city view upgrade, personally, I'd go for a high pool view which will include the Spring Mtains view. SP is about 5-6 miles south of Mandalay Bay, so the effect is minimal in my opinion. All a matter of taste though.

One way or the other I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay.

Good Luck!

I ate at a seafood bar at Southpoint last year. I had a great meal.
I am amazed at the responses I received in a very short time. I do thank each and everyone for your input. I am sure we will enjoy the stay!!

Thanks to all
RM, I forgot about the Oyster Bar (another carryover from Gaughn's past), since never eaten at the one at SP. I'm sure it's every bit as good as Big Al's at the Orleans, which is great.

Good Luck!
