triathlete collects disability payments (POL)

This relates back to the Values thread but I'm sure this person will never pay back what they have defrauded from the taxpayers and soon she will be able to collect social security and medicare!

Medically Retired Cop Collects Money for 5 years while running ironman triathlons

She's a medically-retired police officer who collects a worker's compensation check every month for an injury she said prevented her from doing her job.

Taxpayers in the city of Mesa are paying $508 a month for the rest of Glemba's life, in addition to her medical retirement benefits.

Jim Quiggle of the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, a watchdog group in Washington, DC, asked, "Should there be more scrutiny, should there be more transparency?"

Quiggle said cases like Glemba's raise a lot of questions about how Arizona approves and tracks disability claims.

"When we're dealing with an issue that could be costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars over the lifetime of the person's retirement, maybe even millions, you have to ask the question," said Quiggle.

She must feel she is "entitled" to this payment.....
It reminds me of the lottery winner in Michigan that was collecting food stamps.

There's 2 ways to deal with these kinds of issues.
1) create more oversight and penalties for those who abuse the system.
2) make accross the board cuts in funding for the programs which hurts everyone using them...even the old lady with Parkinson's disease.

I prefer #1....how about you?
Insurance companies visit the facebook pages of disabled folks looking for evidence of non-disability. Happens all the time. This time it's a person you'd think would have better morals.
Just keep in mind not all disabilities are physical it is possible there was some mental disability there as well. The conclusion of the article says the board knew about her amateur athletics when they approved her for disability.

I thought about that. Maybe her back injury prevents her from carrying 50lbs on her back and if that is a requirement of her job, she can't do her job. Common sense would say that her employer would find her something else to do that she is physically able to do. She might be physically unable to perform her current job functions but she's physically able to work in a less strenuous job.
From Malibber2----"Just keep in mind not all disabilities are physical it is possible there was some mental disability there as well. Personally, I love it when frauds are exposed.
I don't think jail time is solution - the jails are already full. I think withholding ANY and ALL government payments is the message we need to send to these crooks - no tax refunds, social security, medicare, etc. Otherwise, I believe many people will just continue to do this as they believe they paid into the system so they are now entitled.

How is that oversight working for us the taxpayers? IMHO - not very good. The ranks of the people collecting disability continues to grow to staggering levels --- as many people feel they are "entitled".

It is quite the catch-22 isn't it?
