Well... I run a Mac Pro, and I get the warnings. In the 27 years I've owned Macs I've never had a virus or lost data due to a crash. But, I still take precautions.

frank: What precautions would you suggest I take? I'm running OS-X Mountain Lion. I know there really aren't any Mac viruses per se, but I assume there is a possibility of malware attacks...

I'm not really making any suggestions, but I'll tell you what I do. I use AVAST! because it's free and monitors my online activity and incoming mail. I occasionally get warnings like the one mentioned in this thread. It never amounts to anything. I got accustomed to running Norton at my last job and now that I work at home I still like to occasionally scan my hard drive for problems. It could be a colossal waste of time.

I bought my first Apple in 1979. Never had a virus. Never installed any virus software.

How could you possibly know that you've never had a virus?

Not all viruses are immediately apparent.
Avast! just picked it up on my end...

If this double posts, sorry. Last 2 days been getting the same thing here . AVG caught it and got rid of it.

Maybe I should plug in that old computer and see if the virus is ready to activate after 34 years.
I've never gotten any warnings here. But then again, I go directly to the website and not the homepage!

It's entirely possible that none of your Apple computers ever had a virus.

But without antivirus software, you very well may have had some and not known it. For instance, the OSX/Krowi backdoor from a few years ago that wasn't apparent to infected users.
