Nugget, I feel the same way about Hertz that you do about Alamo.

I have had such consistently good experiences with Hertz that it's not worth the anxiety of dealing with another company.

I rented from Hertz in San Diego. It sucked.

I have a cousin in San Diego who can set you up next time you are there. It's not my cousin's spare car, but his neighbor's nephew's vehicle.

It was a business rental. Our employee handbook doesn't allow for such sketchy rentals.
This is why I always use Enterprise....
I've heard too many horror stories about Payless and their evil cousin FOX Rentals. I wont try either.
I've received the hard sell from Alamo on insurance even though my credit card pays for it. I know its their job and they have to do it...and they get disciplined if they dont do it...but its still annoying anyway.

Luckily, most of the bigger rental companies have a "bypass the counter" program which is well worth signing up for just to avoid the nagging sales people.

I'm largely not a fan of technology replacing human beings in the modern workforce...but in the case of salespeople, it cant happen quickly enough.
Maybe now all of you got a taste of what it's like signing up for Obamacare. First a feeling of hope because of "change", then when you think you've successfully completed the effort you see something you did not expect, and then comes the sticker shock, which in this new healthcare nightmare comes in the form of unreal deductibles and extraordinary co-pays. Smoke, mirrors, and bait & change at its very, very best.

Rental car pet peeves:

1. The size car they advertise, where the car is usually one size smaller than most of the population considers it to be. In other words what they call a mid-sized car, most would call small. What they call a large car most would call mid-sized.
2. The tank of gas thing. You can buy a tank of gas on them and turn it in with less than half a gallon of gas left in the tank. You won't ever get a great price on the gas. They tell you what you will be charged an arm and a leg if you come back with less than you started. Most people fill the tank at least as high as when they took the car, and many of them fill it even more, which means the rental car company is receiving a lot of free gas.
3. The insurance thing. I've called my insurance company and my credit card company to see if I was covered and was told by both of them that I was. Yet if you tell the clerk this, they will still try to sell it to you under the notion that you will have a lot of hassles in trying to pay for damages.
4. The car with multiple dents in it. You walk around the car and note the dents. Later you realize that you didn't have certain dents noted and wonder if they are going to claim you did it. Fortunately they have never done this to me.

I never remember receiving a charge for road service. My recollection is that there is a number to call on the key chain.

There is one situation where it may make sense even if you have good coverage; foreign locations. I was in charge of a small group in Grand Cayman and one member of the group got in an accident in her rental car. I don't recall the amount but even though she had coverage through some source, (NOT the rental companies CDW), they would not let her leave the island until the damages had been paid. I also don't recall how it was resolved, but I do know she still isn't down there

I just checked online and found at least one reference stating this could happen, depending on the locale. If anyone is considering a rental outside the U.S. I'd suggest it would be worthwhile to look into this further before assuming you are completely covered.

Stay classy albeadle.

How does it feel ?.......you took a great big stinking brown turd SHIT all over Fritoman's thread about rental cars. Are you proud of yourself ?

At what point in the day do you stop hating ? Is it after the news goes off at 10:30 ? Perhaps midnight ? Maybe you keep the hatred a churning well past 3am ? Or could it be the hate just runs 24/7 with you ?

You are a PATHETIC SCUMBAG. An ASS OF ALL ASSES.
Wouldn't ya (just once) like to buy the insurance, drive the car all week and as your bringing it back just drive the son of a bitch into a wall and bring it back to the rental facility in a bushel basket??

In the Jackass movie (yeah I'm embarrassed to say I watched it) they rented a car from an agency and took insurance on it. They then ran it in a demolition derby and totaled it. He drove it back on the lot and the manager was furious. He told the manager he was glad he took insurance on it and he asked for his deposit back.

When I went to pick up my car rental at Payless Car Rental, I knew they would try to get me to buy their car insurance, but I always decline. Then the prepay for fuel, I declined (why would I prepay for a full tank ,when I know I will be using less than a 1/2 tank). After he prints the contract, he goes over all the declines I made except for one he did not mention...ROAD-SERVICE. Before I signed off on this contract, I compared the dollar total and it was $20 more than my reservation total amount, I quickly asked about the difference in price, his reply was that this was an automatic charge for road service, I then replied that I DO NOT WANT IT, he replied that with the contract printed it is completed. I told him that it is not completed till I sign it so take it off, which he re-did the contract. I felt like telling him what kind of jerk he was but I did not. But I will say to who goes to Payless Car Rental... PAY attention to the jerk behind the counter or you will PAY extra.

As luck (?) would have it, I have Payless reserved for next week. I booked even though I knew it would probably be a bit of a Battle Royale at the counter. Armed with this, I will make sure that I decline Road Service without being asked. Thanks very much for the heads-up.

I think the snottiest agent I ever had was actually with Alamo before the days of the kiosk. He was still barking at me as I left with contract in hand. When I got my customer survey e-mail, I blasted the guy - - which I'm sure did nothing - - but made me feel better at least.

Trying to remember my last Vegas rental - - which MAY have been Payless - - not sure. The guy was really working me hard and I became noticeably agitated. He says to me - - "Well, the longer I keep you here, the less you lose in the casinos" - which actually made me laugh. He then stuck me in a black car on a hot day - - which probably made him laugh, too.
