Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Sr. 'on the edge of death'

The anti-gay Kansas preacher who courted notoriety by picketing the funerals of gays and U.S. soldiers is living out his last days in a hospice care facility near his Topeka church. Steve Drain, a Westboro spokesman, confirmed Sunday that Phelps is in ill health.

The 84-year-old preacher established the small Kansas church in 1955 and made it a household name by picketing funerals, public events and businesses with hateful signs attacking gay people, Jews and others.

He was a successful civil rights attorney. He was a liberal Democrat who ran for public office in Kansas six times as a Democrat. He was a fundraiser for Al Gore's presidential campaign. He has also displayed and encouraged hatred on a level matched by very few other human beings. Some of his family members will likely, and unfortunately, carry on his legacy.

Didn't he get kicked out of his own church?

One can only hope that if there is such a place as hell that he suffers, forever, a punishment suitable to the pain and anguish he has caused here on earth. I truly hate that man and all who follow him. I wish them all the same fate. Quickly!

I guess it would be justice if gay people showed up at his funeral with hateful signs and rhetoric for his attending family and friends. But I would say two wrongs dont make a right.

It doesn't only have to be gay people, it could also be veterans. You are right that two wrongs don't make a right, but I would sure love for these nut cases to see how hurtful it feels when people are protesting at a funeral or burial of someone that people loved.

Wonder if the gays will show up out of respect at his funeral?

Phelps imminent demise presents a great opportunity for the targets of his hate to once again distinguish themselves from him by not reflecting his venom back at him.
