People are so naive about how the world works. There aren’t more refineries because that is how companies in that business want it. A smaller supply leads to higher profits. As far as the drilling goes the big oil companies are fine with that too as a big part of their market plan is to control the market.

Sure they want to drill in pristine locations because they have determined it would be easier and cheaper to extract the oil from those locations. However, it wouldn’t increase the supply of oil on the market. While the oil was flowing from that low hanging fruit they would just cut back production elsewhere and pad their profits with the decreased costs. They would laugh all the way to the bank relishing in the thought of how they duped the rubes once again.

EPA. That controls ObeyMe's world. The Chinese are loving ObeyMe's energy policies and have since he took office. They are drilling in the gulf where ObeyMe says American oil companies can't. They aren't doing it for a negative balance sheet.
ANWR would drill on 2,000 acres of land out of 19,000,000

Maliber's argument is weakened by the fact that as the US natural gas supply has increased, the price has gone down.

Some congressmen have proposed a tax on miles driven, which could be unconstitional as an invasion of privacy

We've gone through this. There's no truth to that story at all.

Stop lying. To yourself and us.
It would not be hard to figure out that I'm for drilling and for oil and for using all our resources....responsibly of course.

Now, that said I have to side with Chily here. The Chinese are not drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. There are only two nationalities drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. and Mexico. And yes, the U.S. is still drilling in the Gulf, albeit at a much lower profit margin.

And Malibber2, that is either crazy paranoia or just plain ignorance talking. Oil companies do not want to keep supply down. Higher profits are made off of higher volume. Always and every time.
There are no new refineries being built because profits can not be realized by building to modern environmental standards. Calculate in taxes on new construction and it is even worse. The only hope of continued profits is to continue to upgrade and operate the grandfathered refineries we already have.

Ugh. Not true.

Two are being built right now, approved by President Obama's EPA.

Not true. But so what if it was?

How big was Little Boy relative to Hiroshima?

I stand corrected.

But even the title of the news story states that they are "bucking the trend".

Also to note. These really are not refineries in the all out Petro chemical sense. They are small modular, intermediate "crackers" designed to make lots of diesel then ship/sell the "byproducts", which can later be further refined into other products at other refineries. Their small size enable them to keep within the environmental regulations.
There is also mention of using hydrocrackers. These are the most polluting type of molecule cracker. Sure, they give off way less atmospheric pollutants but the water pollution is far greater and much harder to clean up.

The point is that we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then,
when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right.

Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is
that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.

You're going to bring up George Orwell here? At this point in the debate, really??

And to answer just the words and not the author...
My point is, refineries can not be built to keep up with demand due to environmental regulations, coupled with high labor cost and taxes. There is no profit in it at this time. Your own cited story corroborates this.

And your nuclear bomb analogy is way off too. But hey, most of the folks here will never understand that.
