Wireless Routers

It looks like our router is going on the blink. Its' only about a year old and has worked fine til a few weeks ago when the trouble started, sucks because its only about a year old. Its a negear and the last netgear worked fine til it got zapped by lightening. Our neighbors have a MOT and we can get that signal in our basement, that a pretty long range and have looked at a few but, man, they're pretty expensive. We don't really need range, just reliability for 3-5 gadgets with range of 100' max'. We'll be watching movies using it so I guess we'll need more bandwith(I don't know this for sure, very tech challenged), so any opinions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Contact Netgear customer service. Maybe if you're a smooth talker, they will replace it under warranty.
Go with another cheap one, keep letting the lightening zap it... consider it the fuse in your system. Keeps you from frying a laptop or expensive router.
I have this one and it works just fine:

I've been using a Linksys Router now for the last 6 years now without any problems.
I just hooked up a Motorola that went for about $100 at Best Buy. Web browsing is fine on my IPAD but streaming video is awful. I dont know if that is due to my DSL connection or the WIFI router attached to it.
I have a linksys and it works great. Plenty of range. I can get signal anywhere in the house. Cost was about 60 bucks.
We've had 2 routers one wired by linksys, had it forever and replaced it with a wireless one by linksys. We've had it for 3 yrs and works great. Cost about $120 back then. Probably $60 now.

John, if the problem was a lightning strike, then your surge protector is to blame. Try and purchase a Triplite. It should run about $39. They do a great job on lightning strikes and allow the surge to zap the surge protector and leave the computer equipment alone. Perfect for Florida residents as they work like a freaking champ.

If your having a coverage problem, you can purchase a repeater for your router. Wireless signals for home use are typically short range so you don't get people trying to leach signal off of you.
I was given a linksys, but don't know how to use it. One of these days I'll look into it. How do these things work anyway?
