Wireless Routers

Simple:

The router takes the signal from the internet and encrypts it an then transmits it out to your pc's, laptops, etc. When you go to another page, your internet device sends a signal out, the router picks it up and sends it over to the internet. There are standards for what frequency the router operates at and the type encryption. They change every few years to offer a longer range and a more secure connection.

Seems like there is frequently a router "deal" at https://slickdeals.net/

It's not a daily deal site, but rather a site that great deals on the internet are listed. I reference it literally daily looking for, and finding, good bargains.

People are always asking my husband to set up their wireless networks because he works for Comcast doing stuff like that all day long. He always tells them to buy a Linksys. If they buy something else, he tells them to call him back when they buy the Linksys. Of course these are friends and family freebies. He has to install anything when he's working.
Thanks for the tips all.
I didn't really explain what we have very well. We have a cable for internet. The cable comes into a modem which my desktop is hardwired to. The wirelss router is wired into that modem. All of our wireless gadgets that we use( tablet,, I-POD, and two laptops) have all started to pick up a connection only intermittently, one minute your on, the next you have no signal. It's irritating as hell. It seems to work OK if your within 10 feet of it, anywhere else in the house is sketchy. This just all came out of the blue recently and the only thing i can think of is the wreless has to be at fault.

BTW, Tony, we did buy a macdaddy surge protector, might even be a triplite. It has cable, phone and electric surge protection.Apperently the cable got hit because the modem blew up right in front of me, it sounded like a .22 shot and scared the sh!t outta me at the time.

You have the typical modem/router configuration that everyone that replied assumed you had. I'm actually sitting at home waiting on the Comcast/Xfinnity guy to come and install some stuff for me. I've installed network wires all over the house. Good thing I color coded them cause I forget where they all go.

Just get a new router and you should be good to go. It's a very easy installation if you don't apply any wireless security and if you live far from your neighbors, you don't really need any security. I use WPA-2 security on my installation but it took me a couple hours to get the laptop, iTouch and iPad to all agree on the security settings. Every router has different interface software. You'll open a browser window, type in 192.168.0.1 and log in using the default username and password.

If it came through the cable, it should have nuked the surge protector first depending upon it was hooked up. The good ones are rated by joules and most have response times of less that a few milliseconds. It's the response time of the surge protector and the fact that it acts as a fuse blowing out before the electric can damage anything else. If the modem went pop! then either the surge protector failed or the cable wasn't run through it before the splitter got involved. In any case, you may consider replacing the surge protector as it has done it's job.
