Ho claims that what his family has done is "something like robbery." The aging tycoon is apparently in hospital currently, undergoing a procedure to help his breathing. He's been in ill-health for some time now.

Two lanes of northbound U.S. 95 have now been reopened, but one remains closed still following the crash earlier.
We've just learned from Channel 8 "Eyewitness News" that an accident involving as many as a dozen vehicles has closed US 95 northbound, just north of Lake Mead Blvd. Nevada Highway Patrol says there are injuries, but none that appear life-threatening. Now, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun, we've also been identified as the 8th "rudest city" in the U.S. (L.A. was named the rudest) by Travel and Leisure magazine . On a more positive note, Las Vegas was also ranked as as the No. 1 spot for luxury hotels and a wild weekend, and the second-best city for high-end shopping.

Today's "Morning Edition" show on NPR featured a segment about police fatalities nationwide and public perception, for which a 20-year Las Vegas Metro officer was interviewed. Sgt. Norman Jahn takes issue with how he sees the media and other sources portraying police work as a "war", saying "I think we face a greater danger in indoctrinating employees — especially our newer employees — into the mindset that it's us versus them." Jahn was awareded a Medal of Honor in 2006 for showing bravery during a shooting that turned into a standoff at Harrah's.
On Thursday, February 3 the El Cortez will unveil the four finished suites designed by the finalists in the "Design A Suite Downtown" competition, launched in June of last year, and name the winner of the contest who will get to redesign the remainder of the hotel's suites for its 70th anniversary this year.
Just hours after his lawyer Gordon Oldham issues a statement saying that his client planned to launch a lawsuit to retrieve his estimated $3.1 billion casino empire, which Ho claimed had been usurped by members of his family, the Asian casino billionaire made a rare TV appearance to say that all issues had been resolved. "My family and I are very happy. I do not wish to have any changes (to the asset division)," the visibly frail tycoon remarked. Relatives issued a statement saying that Oldham had been fired.

The Louie Dog features yellow mustard, sauerkraut, and onions, and a portion of sales will be donated to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be featured in the fifth episode of the ABC-TV reality series "The Bachelor" on January 31, hosting a group date for bachelor Brad Womack, who shocked fans of the show by rejecting both of his final bachelorettes three years ago, but is now back and apparently ready to make a commitment.
Standard & Poor's ratings agency yesterday issued a negative outlook on CityCenter, giving the Strip metaresort a "B-" corporate credit rating and stating that the complex will have trouble generating enough cash to justify its current capital structure. S&P said holders of the $600 million in notes due 2017, part of a recent $1.5 billion offering used to pay down debt and extend due dates, can expect "negligible recovery."
According to Bloomberg, billionaire Stanley Ho claims that the transfer of his casino empire to certain family members, reported yesterday in this column, is a hostile seizure and goes against his wishes to divide his empire equally among his family. "What really upsets him is that he's not even dead yet, but in the twilight of his life his second and third families appear to be squabbling and pinching it for themselves," said his lawyer.

Controversial Hong Kong casino mogul Stanley Ho has handed over control of his two dozen Macau casinos to family members, reports today's R-J, and no longer has an "attributable interest" in SJM Holdings.
We've just learned that Atomic Liquor, the oldest bar in Las Vegas and owner of liquor license #00001, has closed. The site's transformation from a café to a bar in 1951 coincided with the first atom-bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site and the venue was popular with everyone from Roy Rogers to members of the Rat Pack; even Barbra Streisand recalls playing pool there in her memoirs. The bar remained under the original husband-and-wife ownership of Joe and Stella Sobchik until first Joe, and then Stella, three months later on January 15 of this year, passed away. Our understanding is that the couple's son does not wish to take over the family business, so until further notice this downtown landmark is closed.
In the first of today's two NFL Conference Championship games, the Packers are 3.5-point favorites over the Bears and the total is 42. In the second game, the Steelers are 4-point favorites over the Jets with a total of 38. Both games opened at -3, which means that money came in mostly on the favorites.

The casino at the Lake Tahoe resort once owned by Frank Sinatra and frequented by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and the Rat Pack, closed last April after three years of operating at a loss. But now operators say they plan to reopen the casino with limited gaming as soon as early February, beginning with video poker machines at the bar and slots in the lobby.

A foreclosure hearing for the Atlantic City Hilton has been called off while both sides continue to try to work out an agreement to possibly sell the Boardwalk resort-casino, which is in default of its mortgage. Attorneys were scheduled to appear today before state Superior Court Judge William C. Todd III to argue a motion that would allow lenders to foreclose on what is Atlantic City's smallest casino, but both sides have agreed to put the litigation on hold for the time being, reports the pressofAtlanticCity.com.
Today's episdoe of NPR's Marketplace show features a story about Atlantic City's efforts to diversify away from its dependence upon casino revenue, in the light of its persistent economic decline and is eyeing the convention business. The show airs locally at 3 p.m. on 88.9 KNPR.
According to today's
Vancouver city council has given preliminary approval for what would be the largest casino in Western Canada, although councillors are awaiting answers to many questions before the plan goes to a public hearing on Feb. 17. If the project gets the green light, the casino would be part of a massive development around BC Place and would include 150 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines, making it three times the size of the Edgewater casino.
Analysts have predicted that casino revenue in Macau may climb 30 percent to $30 billion in 2011, thanks to increased visitation from mainland China. "Improvements in the macro environment, as well as China's tourism push, should result in higher average spending and hence revenues," wrote analysts for CLSA Ltd., as reported by Bloomberg.
It's been a turbulent couple of weeks on the Las Vegas dining scene (see earlier posts in this column), and now CNN's Eatocracy blog is weighing in, with Frank Pellegrino, Jr., co-owner of Rao's in Caesars Palace, and Eating Las Vegas author John Curtas sharing their thoughts on the apparent shift from "fine dining" to a more casual-oriented culinary scene.

Las Vegas officials voted today to send an ordinance to the full City Council which, if passed, would allow for street performers and entertainers under the canopy of the Fremont Street Experience, provided that certain criteria were met, including not interfering with pedestrian traffic and staying a designated distance from doorways, ATM machines, outdoor cafe areas, and so on. The proposal could go to a vote as soon as Feb. 2, reports this afternoon's R-J.

We have yet to speak with the man himself, so this is purely what we've read as reported in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, but according to gossip columnist Norm!, Eating Las Vegas co-author John Curtas was told he was unwelcome at the closing party for Alex at Wynn on Saturday, following comments he made in his blog about the resort's attitude towards fine dining vs. nightlife. Curtas allegedly showed up to pay his respects to chef Alex Stratta, but was told by a PR representative that his presence was not wanted. We'll bring you more on this if we hear anything.
We were just on the Strip and encountered several fire trucks at the Flamingo/Las Vegas Blvd. intersection. It turns out that the Fire Department was recently called to deal with a mattress fire on the 25th floor at Bally's. We'll keep you posted if we hear more, but for now it doesn't seem that Strip traffic is any worse than normal and reports say the fire was extinguished by the hotel's sprinkler system. She'll split the prize with a couple from Washington. How do you win a huge lottery? According to an article in today's Parade magazine, maybe you just have to visualize it. A woman who won a $112 million prize says she concentrated on winning that exact amount long before the lottery she won ever reached that level. Stranger things.

Lenders behind the $750 million south-Strip retail and office complex are asking a New York bankruptcy judge to allow them to sell the property, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy some months ago. According to Channel 13, attorneys for lenders led by the Bank of Nova Scotia, said in court documents filed this week that talks have broken down with lenders owed $449 million.

It's been a tough time for fans of the flamboyant entertainer, with first the closure of the Liberace Museum last year, and more recently word that the tribute show in the Miracle Mile Shops would not be returning. The good news is that Harrah's has just announced that Daryl Wagner, a Liberace impersonator, will be joining the cast of Legends in Concert on Monday, Jan. 17 for a run that's confirmed at least through Feb. 5. Today sees the official launch of Chinese New Year at Palazzo, with a display in the lobby featuring a 16-foot-tall animated bunny for the Year of the Rabbit. The Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at Bellagio completed its transformation to Chinese New Year earlier this week. Both exhibits are free to view.
The Stratosphere Tower in investing the relatively modest sum of $20 million on a remodeling program that's already seen 900 of the guest rooms upgraded, with more to follow, plus new landscaping and the addition of a valet area at the Strip entrance, reports today's LV Sun.
The Zagat restaurant guide has declared Las Vegas the "Most Expensive Restaurant City in America," but the authors of Huntington Press' Eating Las Vegas beg to differ. "Las Vegas also offers increasingly numerous opportunities for budget-conscious diners to enjoy world-class cuisine at affordable prices," comments co-author and local food critic Al Mancini. "Several high-end restaurants are now offering inexpensive happy-hour menus at their bars. Gaming columnist Liz Benston writes in the Las Vegas Sun how a proposal by Nevada legislators to increase the fee levied on slot machines by almost 65 percent is gathering momentum in light of state budgetary pressures, although the move is not surprisingly opposed by the casino industry and would likely result in the additional charges being passed on to the consumer, via higher-holding machines.
Las Vegas visitor volume was up by 1 percent in November, to 2,933,897, but while this marked the city's 9th consecutive monthly increase in traffic, a three-month-long statewide uptick in gaming revenues ended the same month, with the Strip experiencing a 4 percent decline. December, which saw healthy New Year's visitation, is expected to have yielded better results, however.

Lawmakers in the New Jersey Assembly and Senate approved two bills Monday that will allow the state to take over various services in designated sections of the city and create a tourism district, and to deregulate the city's 11 casinos, all in an effort to kickstart the beleagured gambling destination, which has suffered heavily from the economic downturn and increased competition from neighboring states.

Online gossip site TMZ.com reports that Eva Longoria Parker is being sued for more than $4,000,000 by an investor in her Beso restaurant project at Crystals, who claims the actress ran an illegal scheme of lending $1 million to the company at an exorbitant rate of interest that would net her $4.6 million over 2 years and which violates California law. There's been no comment to date from reps of the actress, who filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for Beso and her Eve nightclub, also located at CityCenter, last week.

Today's New York Tiomes reports how Delta has joined American Airlines in refusing to work with a number of leading Online Travel Agents (OTAs), including local provider Vegas.com, but instead will be selling tickets exclusively through their own sites, or via affiliate deals. The argument is over the fees that airlines must pay to list their flights on OTA websites, also a bone of contention between hotels and online agencies. Attendance at this year's Consumer Electronics Show was up about 14,000 visitors on last year's expo, with some 140,000 attendees visiting the four-day convention, reports today's LV Sun. About 30,000 of the visitors were international, a record for the show.

For the fourth consecutive year, revenues for Atlantic City's 11 casinos have declined, with figures to be released Monday afternoon by the state Casino Control Commission expected to show that the New Jersey gambling center has lost nearly a third of its business since the end of 2006, with a approximate 10 percent drop for 2010 expected. Plans underway aimed at reversing the city's fortunes indlude a deregulation of casinos and a concerted marketing and upgrade effort, aimed at improving Atlantic City's image.

LV Review-Journal columnist Mike Weatherford writes that there will be a reunion tonight for many of the principles of the '80s show "Playboy's Girls of Rock 'n' Roll." The show played at the old Maxim for five years and starred Michelle Rohl and Debrah Rae. It also produced comedian George Lopez, magician Valentino, and talk-show host Jenny Jones. Murder charges have been filed against Jason "Blu" Griffith, the ex-boyfriend of Fantasy performer Deborah Flores-Narvaez, who went missing last month. A Metro source told FOX5 News that the dancer's body has been found and that there is a co-conspirator involved in the case, but no details of that person have been released as yet.

It's being reported by various sources that Palms owner George Maloof, whose foray into the condo sector coincided with the crash of the Las Vegas real estate market, is in discussions with private equity groups, including one of the co-owners of Caesars Entertainment Corp., to take over a controlling stake in the Palms.
Earlier this week, Bloomberg News reported that L.A.-based Leonard Green & Partners and TPG Capital of Fort Worth, Texas, had acquired most of a $400 million loan backed by the Palms that came due last October and wasn't refinanced. The actress is quoted as saying that she plans to be more hands-on in the running of her Las Vegas enterprises in the future.
Florida Governor Rick Scott announced yesterday that he's open to allowing Las Vegas-style destination resort-casinos in the state, a move that would end a decades-old ban on high stakes table games. Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson has already said he'd be willing to invest as much as $3 billion in a project in Miami.
The "Travel" section of ABCNews.com carries a feature on downtown's Neon Museum, which has been in an embryonic state since the mid-'90s due to lack of funding, but will hopefully be completed, with a visitor center, by the end of this year.
In a totally unexpected announcement broken by Robin Leach in his Vegas Deluxe blog, Alex, the flagship gourmet French restaurant at Wynn, named for chef Alex Stratta, will close January 15. Stratta is quoted as being "really bummed out," while a spokesman for the property stated simply that "high-end French dining is not what people want these days." There's no word yet as to what will take its place; Stratta will continue to operate his more casual "Stratta" restaurant at Wynn.
As reported by the R-J, an all-time record was set yesterday for the number of taxis loaded at McCarran International Airport. Apparently, a total of 14,495 cabs were loaded at Terminals 1 and 2 yesterday, which is approximately 4 percent more than the prior record of 13,927, set on Jan. 4, 2006, which also coincided with the Consumer Electronics Show. It's another good sign for the resurgence of the convention business in Las Vegas.
Dolce Hotels & Resorts has announced that the former Ritz-Carlton at Lake Las Vegas will reopen February 11 and will be rebranded as Ravella at Lake Las Vegas.

The 53 contestants in the 90th Miss America Pageant arrive in Las Vegas today for a week of preliminary competitions prior to the main event, which takes place in the Theatre for the Performing Arts at Planet Hollywood on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ABC.
The Ocean Club, which opened Christmas Eve and is the first casino to operate in Syria since the 1970s, is already facing the threat of closure. Mohammed Habash, an scholar of Islam and member of the Syrian Parliament, claims that the venue is operating illegally and that there is no legal provision for a gambling license in Syria. He plans to raise the issue before Parliament and have any gambling operation shut down.
MGM Resorts International has launched the first stage of its new "M Life" customer loyalty program, which replaces the former Players Club. Like Caesars Entertainment's Total Rewards program, M Life will reward patrons for money spent at any of the group's participating outlets, not just for gambling, and top rewards will include perks like performing in a Cirque show or having the Bellagio fountain choreographed to a song of your choice. Only the gaming facet of the program has been rolled out so far; the rest will follow later this year. We'll be analyzing M Life in the next issue of the LVA newsletter.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show formally opens tonight, with a keynote address by Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Corp.'s chief executive. Some 2,500 exhibitors are anticipated at the LVCVA and exhibits will be open Thursday through Sunday. The show is open only to industry professionals.

The Golden Nugget has installed an ATM that dispenses gold instead of cash. It's one of only 16 such machines around the world and is located behind the hotel's VIP Lounge, near the main lobby of the Gold Tower.
As of today, guests can use a credit or debit card to purchase gold coins and 24-karat "bars" weighing from 1 to 250 grams at the Gold to Go machine. At current prices, 250 grams of 24-karat gold is worth about $11,000.

There were two winning tickets sold in Tuesday night's $355 million Mega Millions lottery, the fouth largest jackpot in U.S. history. One ticket was sold in Washington and another in Idaho. First ancient petroglyphs in neighboring Arizona were damaged by graffiti last year; now comes the sad news that the famed Nevada Shoe Tree has been destroyed by vandals. The mysterious and whimsical organic attraction, located on U.S. 50 near Middlegate, was apparently chopped down late last week. The 70-foot cottonwood, adorned with hundreds of abandoned shoes and boots, has been a popular spot for sightseers since the 1980s. The Churchill County sheriff's office is investigating the incident.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved American Wagering Inc.'s Blackberry application that lets state residents place sports bets from their BlackBerry. American Wagering, which operates 76 Leroy's race and sports books and self-service kiosks in Nevada, is the first company in the U.S. with an approved smart-phone app for sports betting; similar apps that work on Google's Android platform and the iPhone are in the pipeline. Approval of the apps is subject to testing to prove the "technology can be disabled at the state border," since Nevada is currently the only state where sports betting is legal.
Long-time friends George Maloof and Michael Morton announced today that they've reached an amicable settlement of their pending litigation. Under the terms of the agreement, Maloof will take over the management of NM Ventures, the entity that owns and operates N9NE Steakhouse, Ghostbar, Rain Nightclub, Nove Italiano, the Playboy Club, Moon Nightclub, and the Stuff store, all at the Palms; Morton has sold his interest in the venture and will focus on his new wine bar and restaurant La Cave at Wynn.
Tonight at 7 p.m. Clark County Library will welcome several characters from the world of organized crime as part of its ongoing "mob" lecture series. Tonight's speakers include, retired FBI special agent Dennis Arnoldy, who led the team that arrested the Hole in the Wall Gang; Andrew DiDonato, the subject of Surviving the Mob who worked for the Gambino and Genovese crime families; Dennis Griffin, whose books include The Battle for Las Vegas: The Law vs. the Mob; Salvatore "Fat Sal" Mangiavillano, who turned government witness against Peter Gotti and Huck Carbonaro; and Robert Allen of the Vegas Mob Tour.
2011 should be an interesting year for downtown Las Vegas, with a burgeoning nightlife scene seemingly starting to really pick up in 2010 and lots of new projects slated or even underway. The latest news is of a new bike parking facility that's due to open later this month in an effort to encourage sustainable transport practices in the area. The facility, which will require a $20 registration fee at sign-up (this gets you $15-worth of parking on a prepaid smart card), can accommodate up to 78 bikes and will offer a repair service while they are parked. Dollar General, one of the discount stores that's benefitted from the recession, has announced that it will create 6,000 jobs at 625 new stores across the country, including in Nevada, which will see its first Dollar General locations open in 2011.
According to an article in today's New York Times, the success of reality TV series "Pawn Stars", based around the Gold & Silver pawnbroker in downtown Las Vegas, helped push up History Channel's ratings by 25 percent last year.

Citing their unpopularity with guests, Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas CEO John Unwin confirms that the Strip's newest resort-casino will not be charging a resort fee and will offer property-wide free WiFi access. Neighboring high-end properties Bellagio, Aria, and Vdara have all recently introduced mandatory resort fees.
The Asian gambling enclave reported that December revenue was up sixty-six percent from the same period in 2009. For the year, Macau revenue was up fifty-eight percent from the previous year at $23.51 billion, setting a new record.
Heavy snow on the west side of town has closed State Route 160 at State Route 159; the Las Vegas Beltway is also closed to northbound traffic at the Summerlin Parkway on-ramp because of an accident. Authorities are recommending snow tires for state routes 156, 157 and 158. All drivers are asked to use caution because of the slick roads; the snow is expected to stop by mid-morning.

It was a mostly controlled New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, although there was one post-midnight death resulting from an altercation with police in North Las Vegas. Despite huge crowds on the Strip, there were no violent incidents reported and the Boulevard was cleaned up and fully accessible by early morning on the 1st. There were 17 reported felony arrests and 52 for suspicion of DUI. The fireworks were a big success, and the biggest event of the evening, the Coldplay/Jay-Z concert at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, reportedly played for three hours with much of it being transmitted on Cosmo's big marquee.
The infamous Blackjack Ball will be held tonight (in an undisclosed location). More than a hundred blackjack luminaries will meet to compete in a skills competition and elect the 2011 member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame. Anthony Curtis will be there and we'll report the results tomorrow.

A nightlife concept not seen since House of Blue's Foundation Room debuted with Mandalay Bay, Angel Management Group's new Savile Row opens this weekend inside Luxor and will be a private club for members and invited guests only. Located in the space formerly occupied by Noir Bar, the exclusive 2,000-square-foot nightclub will open with only 300 memberships being distributed; membership benefits include the ability to skip the line, enter through the private Parlor, and give guest referrals.
