Las Vegas has been piling up unwelcome accolades of late, including making the lists of "dumbest" and "rudest" cities in the U.S. Now we can add to that with the dubious distinction of having some of the worst water in the U.S. If you want to test yours, you can pick up a free testing kit from Home Depot, we happened to notice over the weekend.

According to figures released today by the state Gaming Control Board, Las Vegas Strip casinos suffered a $2.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2010. However, this was 38.2 percent less than in the prior fiscal year, reports the LV Sun.

January 31, 2011 10:43 Ho Plot Thickens:

A new twist is unfolding in the story of Stanley Ho's casino empire and its transfer to various family members, reports abcNews. Apparently, video has been released of Ho saying that he was forced to drop his lawsuit against two of his "wives" and their families and to fire his attorney, and instead wishes to continue pursuing the case and retain Gordon Oldham as his lawyer. Ho claims that what his family has done is "something like robbery." The aging tycoon is apparently in hospital currently, undergoing a procedure to help his breathing. He's been in ill-health for some time now.

Two lanes of northbound U.S. 95 have now been reopened, but one remains closed still following the crash earlier.

We've just learned from Channel 8 "Eyewitness News" that an accident involving as many as a dozen vehicles has closed US 95 northbound, just north of Lake Mead Blvd. Nevada Highway Patrol says there are injuries, but none that appear life-threatening. In recent months Las Vegas has been tagged as above averagely dumb, moderately tolerant, and surprisingly unalcoholic, among other national lists. Now, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun, we've also been identified as the 8th "rudest city" in the U.S. (L.A. was named the rudest) by Travel and Leisure magazine . On a more positive note, Las Vegas was also ranked as as the No. 1 spot for luxury hotels and a wild weekend, and the second-best city for high-end shopping.

January 27, 2011 10:34 Metro Cop Speaks Out on NPR:

Today's "Morning Edition" show on NPR featured a segment about police fatalities nationwide and public perception, for which a 20-year Las Vegas Metro officer was interviewed. Sgt. Norman Jahn takes issue with how he sees the media and other sources portraying police work as a "war", saying "I think we face a greater danger in indoctrinating employees — especially our newer employees — into the mindset that it's us versus them." Jahn was awareded a Medal of Honor in 2006 for showing bravery during a shooting that turned into a standoff at Harrah's.

On Thursday, February 3 the El Cortez will unveil the four finished suites designed by the finalists in the "Design A Suite Downtown" competition, launched in June of last year, and name the winner of the contest who will get to redesign the remainder of the hotel's suites for its 70th anniversary this year.

Just hours after his lawyer Gordon Oldham issues a statement saying that his client planned to launch a lawsuit to retrieve his estimated $3.1 billion casino empire, which Ho claimed had been usurped by members of his family, the Asian casino billionaire made a rare TV appearance to say that all issues had been resolved. "My family and I are very happy. I do not wish to have any changes (to the asset division)," the visibly frail tycoon remarked. Relatives issued a statement saying that Oldham had been fired.

Palace Station has already made the switch, with Sunset Station following on Thursday, Boulder Station in late March, and Santa Fe Station and Texas Station by the end of June.

The Louie Dog features yellow mustard, sauerkraut, and onions, and a portion of sales will be donated to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

January 25, 2011 10:06 Bad News for CityCenter:

Standard & Poor's ratings agency yesterday issued a negative outlook on CityCenter, giving the Strip metaresort a "B-" corporate credit rating and stating that the complex will have trouble generating enough cash to justify its current capital structure. S&P said holders of the $600 million in notes due 2017, part of a recent $1.5 billion offering used to pay down debt and extend due dates, can expect "negligible recovery."

According to Bloomberg, billionaire Stanley Ho claims that the transfer of his casino empire to certain family members, reported yesterday in this column, is a hostile seizure and goes against his wishes to divide his empire equally among his family. "What really upsets him is that he's not even dead yet, but in the twilight of his life his second and third families appear to be squabbling and pinching it for themselves," said his lawyer.

THe $8.5 million upgrade is due to be completed in April, and includes hotel-room renovations at Buffalo Bill's and on ongoing room-remodel and casino-upgrade at Primm Valley is halfway complete.

January 24, 2011 10:00 Historic Bar Closed:

We've just learned that Atomic Liquor, the oldest bar in Las Vegas and owner of liquor license #00001, has closed. The site's transformation from a café to a bar in 1951 coincided with the first atom-bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site and the venue was popular with everyone from Roy Rogers to members of the Rat Pack; even Barbra Streisand recalls playing pool there in her memoirs. The bar remained under the original husband-and-wife ownership of Joe and Stella Sobchik until first Joe, and then Stella, three months later on January 15 of this year, passed away. Our understanding is that the couple's son does not wish to take over the family business, so until further notice this downtown landmark is closed.

In the first of today's two NFL Conference Championship games, the Packers are 3.5-point favorites over the Bears and the total is 42. In the second game, the Steelers are 4-point favorites over the Jets with a total of 38. Both games opened at -3, which means that money came in mostly on the favorites.

A 40,000-seat domed stadium that would host UNLV football games has been proposed for an area close to the campus, between the Thomas & Mac Center basketball venue and Paradise Road. The Rebels currently play at Sam Boyd Stadium, located way out beyond Boulder Highway. Everything is in preliminary stages, but the developers are the principals at the Silverton.

We have yet to speak with the man himself, so this is purely what we've read as reported in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, but according to gossip columnist Norm!, Eating Las Vegas co-author John Curtas was told he was unwelcome at the closing party for Alex at Wynn on Saturday, following comments he made in his blog about the resort's attitude towards fine dining vs. nightlife. Curtas allegedly showed up to pay his respects to chef Alex Stratta, but was told by a PR representative that his presence was not wanted. We'll bring you more on this if we hear anything.

We were just on the Strip and encountered several fire trucks at the Flamingo/Las Vegas Blvd. intersection. It turns out that the Fire Department was recently called to deal with a mattress fire on the 25th floor at Bally's. It's being reported by various sources that Palms owner George Maloof, whose foray into the condo sector coincided with the crash of the Las Vegas real estate market, is in discussions with private equity groups, including one of the co-owners of Caesars Entertainment Corp., to take over a controlling stake in the Palms.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg News reported that L.A.-based Leonard Green & Partners and TPG Capital of Fort Worth, Texas, had acquired most of a $400 million loan backed by the Palms that came due last October and wasn't refinanced. The word is that Maloof wants to partner with the private equity firms to remain the operator of the property with a reduced ownership stake. Stratta is quoted as being "really bummed out," while a spokesman for the property stated simply that "high-end French dining is not what people want these days." There's no word yet as to what will take its place; Stratta will continue to operate his more casual "Stratta" restaurant at Wynn.

As reported by the R-J, an all-time record was set yesterday for the number of taxis loaded at McCarran International Airport. Apparently, a total of 14,495 cabs were loaded at Terminals 1 and 2 yesterday, which is approximately 4 percent more than the prior record of 13,927, set on Jan. 4, 2006, which also coincided with the Consumer Electronics Show. It's another good sign for the resurgence of the convention business in Las Vegas.

The Ocean Club, which opened Christmas Eve and is the first casino to operate in Syria since the 1970s, is already facing the threat of closure. Mohammed Habash, an scholar of Islam and member of the Syrian Parliament, claims that the venue is operating illegally and that there is no legal provision for a gambling license in Syria. He plans to raise the issue before Parliament and have any gambling operation shut down.

MGM Resorts International has launched the first stage of its new "M Life" customer loyalty program, which replaces the former Players Club. Like Caesars Entertainment's Total Rewards program, M Life will reward patrons for money spent at any of the group's participating outlets, not just for gambling, and top rewards will include perks like performing in a Cirque show or having the Bellagio fountain choreographed to a song of your choice. Only the gaming facet of the program has been rolled out so far; the rest will follow later this year. We'll be analyzing M Life in the next issue of the LVA newsletter.

As of today, guests can use a credit or debit card to purchase gold coins and 24-karat "bars" weighing from 1 to 250 grams at the Gold to Go machine. At current prices, 250 grams of 24-karat gold is worth about $11,000.

First ancient petroglyphs in neighboring Arizona were damaged by graffiti last year; now comes the sad news that the famed Nevada Shoe Tree has been destroyed by vandals. The mysterious and whimsical organic attraction, located on U.S. 50 near Middlegate, was apparently chopped down late last week. The 70-foot cottonwood, adorned with hundreds of abandoned shoes and boots, has been a popular spot for sightseers since the 1980s. The Churchill County sheriff's office is investigating the incident.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved American Wagering Inc.'s Blackberry application that lets state residents place sports bets from their BlackBerry. American Wagering, which operates 76 Leroy's race and sports books and self-service kiosks in Nevada, is the first company in the U.S. with an approved smart-phone app for sports betting; similar apps that work on Google's Android platform and the iPhone are in the pipeline. Approval of the apps is subject to testing to prove the "technology can be disabled at the state border," since Nevada is currently the only state where sports betting is legal.

Heavy snow on the west side of town has closed State Route 160 at State Route 159; the Las Vegas Beltway is also closed to northbound traffic at the Summerlin Parkway on-ramp because of an accident. Authorities are recommending snow tires for state routes 156, 157 and 158. All drivers are asked to use caution because of the slick roads; the snow is expected to stop by mid-morning.

It was a mostly controlled New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, although there was one post-midnight death resulting from an altercation with police in North Las Vegas. Despite huge crowds on the Strip, there were no violent incidents reported and the Boulevard was cleaned up and fully accessible by early morning on the 1st. There were 17 reported felony arrests and 52 for suspicion of DUI. The fireworks were a big success, and the biggest event of the evening, the Coldplay/Jay-Z concert at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, reportedly played for three hours with much of it being transmitted on Cosmo's big marquee.
