Passenger counts at McCarran International Airport continued their upward trajectory last month, according to figures released Thursday by the Clark County Department of Aviation. More than 3.1 million passengers passed through the airport in February, up 6.6% on the same month last year, aided in part by the extra Leap Day in 2012.

No, it's not a new attraction for dogs, but today Flightlinez zipline attraction downtown is raising funds for The Animal Foundation, the largest animal shelter in Southern Nevada. From noon to midnight, Flightlinez and the Fremont Street Experience will donate all revenues from zipline rides to the non-profit. Rides are $15 from noon until 6 p.m., $20 thereafter.
Following a record turnout for last year's first nighttime event, but some unfortunate issues with overcrowding and sickness among participants, The Competitor Group has announced changes to the 2012 Zappos.com Rock ‘n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon, which will take place December 2.
Upcoming changes include a new start village across from the Luxor, an earlier start time to the race, a dedicated marathon-only lane, and increased time between the runners. The finish line will be mid-Strip, for ease of hotel access, while the controversial water-station service will also get an upgrade.

Channel 8 is reporting that Metro's evacuated some residences and is closing streets near the 4500 block of Karen Avenue, by Mountain Vista Street, where a wanted suspect is barricaded in a residence. Apparently, the SWAT unit is on the scene and negotiators are attempting to talk with the suspect. People are asked to avoid the area until the situation has been resolved. We'll keep you posted.
Sunday's "Question of the Day" concerned the free entertainment lineup for the Fremont Street Experience this summer, and whether or not it has a theme, like previous years with "Summer of Love" or the less catchy "Summer of the '80s" follow-up.

When we first broke the story ("Today's News" 3/18/2012) that WSOP champ Jamie Gold's relationship with the Tropicana poker room had been ended abruptly not long after it started, we were met with protests and denials from people "in the know." Chad Elie, the only Las Vegas resident among those currently being prosecuted for their key roles in what were deemed illegal Internet poker sites, has pleaded guilty to a charge of processing payments as part of a scheme to deceive banks into handling hundreds of millions of dollars in online gambling transactions. Elie pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison. He has agreed to forfeit $500,000 he earned as a result of the scheme. Sentencing has been set for Oct. 3.

According to the VegasEater blog, chef Jet Tila, formerly of Wazuzu at Wynn, plans to bring his "GastroPIG" pop-up concept to Venetian’s Public House Monday, April 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. The one-off event will apparently feature eight courses sent out two at a time, plus a beverage pairing.
Las Vegas visitation may be up, but tourists are spending less and less time at the tables and machines and more money on dining and shopping, according to new survey results released by the LVCVA. The drop in the number of people who came to Las Vegas to gamble was significant, down to 7 percent last year from 13 percent in 2009. In addition, only 77 percent of visitors gambled in 2011, compared with 84 percent in 2007, and the average budget dropped to $448 from $556 over the same period.
The New York State Racing and Wagering Board is holding an investigation into Aqueduct racetrack following the deaths of 20 horses in just four months. A panel of four experts will examine the condition of the inner track, plus polices on necropsies, pre-race horse examination, veterinary procedures, drug use, public disclosures, and claiming procedures, reports AP. The announcement comes days after the cancelation of HBO's horse-racing drama series "Luck," following a string of equine fatalities during production.
Meanwhile, Saratoga Raceway has suspended live racing until April 11 after several horses were diagnosed with the highly contagious "Strangles" bacterial infection, also known as "equine distemper," which affects the upper respiratory system.

Utah has become the first state to preemptively ban online gambling, having passed legislation that allows the state to opt out of any future Internet poker regulations that may be enacted at a federal level. Those who violate the new statute are guilty of a Class B misdemeanor and are subject to a fine of up to $1,000 and six months jail time.

Illinois today will become the first state to sell individual lottery tickets online, following the Justice Department's opinion, issued last year, that said the Wire Act of 1961 applies only to sports betting. At least 21 other states are considering a move to online lottery sales, in addition to Internet poker.

5,500 artifacts and pieces of intellectual property from the Titanic are expected to fetch upwards of $180 million during a 10-day sale that concludes March 31. The collection includes 350 items from the Titanic ... The Exhibition show at the Luxor and must be purchased as a complete collection. This April 14 will be the 100th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic and the Las Vegas hotel will commemorate the event by holding a candlelit vigil and moment of silence next Tuesday.

The the light of the denied approval for a casino license, Malaysian gaming giant Genting Group will abandon plans for the $3.8 billion Resorts World Miamai hotel-casino complex and will instead push forward with a scaled down plan for the five-acre site, and plans now to construct a five-star luxury hotel, condominiums, waterfront restaurants, and an 800-foot long promenade along Biscayne Bay. Genting's original ambitious plan for a 5,200 hotel-room complex would have included constructing the world’s largest casino, plus more than 50 restaurants and bars.
While the opeing of the proposed new Splash Canyon water park in Summerlin has been delayed until 2013 (see "Today's News" 2/3/2012), tomorrow sees the debut of a new indoor aquatic experience on the east side of town, when the Hollywood Aquatic Center holds its dedication ceremony at 6 p.m. The 73,000-square-foot facility, open Monday through Saturday, features indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, and a lazy river. A high-speed chase, which resulted in more than one murder suspect being taken into custody, is causing major traffic delays in the area of Tropicana Ave. and Mountain Vista St., where the chase concluded. Metro says those in the car may be responsible for Monday's murder of a man in the Las Vegas Country Club gated community.

Last weekend was the final chance to play the slots and tables at Quito's largest and last-standing casino, following a new Ecuadorian anti-gambling law that came into effect following a referendum last yeart that supported the move. The ban resulted in 3,000 people losing their jobs, with an estimated indirect impact on a further 22,000. Opponents of the ban fear that it will drive the gambling business underground into the hands of illegal mafias.
Station Casinos is introducing a new burger-joint concept to its Wildfire locations (Boulder Highway, E. Sunset, and N. Rancho). Beyonce has confirmed that she will headline for three days over Memorial Day weekend as part of the new Revel resort grand opening in Atlantic City. Following a four-day hearing last week, the Harmon tower at CityCenter, which cost $279 million in construction costs but was never completed due to what's being cited as both defective design and construction work, looks even more likely to be demolished, having been condemned as a public safety hazard by Clark County’s building department. Co-owners MRI are asking County Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez for permission to implode the Harmon prior to a February 2013 trial centered on where responsibility for the defects lies and on CityCenter’s refusal to pay the contractors, reports Vegas Inc.. Caesars Entertainment (CZR) has filed for a massive new share offering which, at $500 million worth of shares, makes it 33 times bigger than last month's IPO. The company is expected to use the money to pay off long-term debt, of which it has almost $20 billion.
It's been determined that the fire started yesterday morning at the Golden Nugget was started deliberately. The 22nd-floor fire was on a floor of the hotel currently closed for renovation and was started in a room being used to store bedding. A man found locked inside the room, which required a pass key to enter, was taken to hospital suffering from severe smoke inhalation. 50 guests were evacuated, but no one else was injured.
Wynn race and sports book director Johnny Avello, who's been making a recreational line on the odds to win "Celebrity Apprentice," currently has Las Vegas performer Penn Jillette as the 5-1 favorite. Penn opened at 8-1; Lisa Lampanelli, who opened at 7-1, is now in second place at with 6-1 odds.

Laugh Factory Las Vegas, a comedy showroom, will be the first element to debut, while monthly Laugh Factory Superstar Comedy Concerts are also planned for the 1,000-seat Tropicana Theater, with a variety of comedy specials, TV series, reality shows, and films also planned for the future, apparently.
From March 20 to 25, MGM Resorts International and Cirque du Soleil will join forces in support of Cirque founder Guy Laliberté's ONE DROP organization that promotes global water awareness and access. Between those dates, Cirque will donate the proceeds from ticket sales of performances of all its Las Vegas shows to help further ONE DROP's mission.

Sports-book operator Cantor Gaming, which controls many of the books around town, is introducing a new betting option called the "Cantor Five" in time for March Madness. Fantasy betting will meet legal wagering when Cantor chooses a team of five NBA players every day and allows bettors to do the same. Using a scoring system similar to fantasy basketball, a computer will then formulate a line on the matchup and bettors can wager on either Cantor’s team or their own against the spread.

It's been announced that Crown nightclub at the Rio will be closed Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for at least 30 days, following the gang-related shooting incident that kicked off in the valet area there last weekend. As far as we know, other events in the club, including the several shows currently housed there, and the comedy and Karaoke nights, will continue as normal.
The new name for Fitzgeralds is the D Las Vegas (with the lower-case "t"), or more informally, the D. The name comes from the location Downtown; the name of the new owner, Derek Stevens; and Stevens' hometown, Detroit. It appears that the name will become official on March 16. Meanwhile, work is ongoin on several property additions and improvements. Among those additions is the just-opened "Longbar," which, at "about 100 feet," is being touted as the longest bar in Nevada.

Although there was seemingly a mass exodus from Las Vegas during the worst of the economic slump, apparently the population of Nevada actually rose by 0.6 percent, or some 17,152 residents, between July 2010 and July 2011, according to figures just released by the state demographer's office.
The Seminole Indian tribe of Florida, owner of the Hard Rock International, is requesting a six-month delay in starting on the new boutique hotel-casino planned for the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, citing the need for more time to obtain permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection. Much of the construction work will take place on the beach. The project had been due to commence mid-July.
While it has yet to appear on the new website, the restaurant at Wynn formerly named is Okada is to reopen in May as Ohtaki, with some changes to the menu. The company continues to deny any connection between the timing of the revamp and the falling out of Steve Wynn and former major investor Kasuo Okada, which is a lead story in today's WSJ. Meanwhile the former Alex, named for chef Alex Stratt, who has also parted ways with Wynn, is to reopen as yet another Wynncore nightclub, named Climaxx! [sic.]

Gaming revenue Atlantic City's 11 casinos was down 6 percent in February, to $242.7 million, compared with the same month a year ago. This despite an extra day in the month, and unseasonally mild weather. Table games were particularly hard hit, with the Tropicana taking a $2 million hit from blackjack whale Don Johnson, the Wyoming CEO whose winning streak continues.
With the March Madness brackets set, Kentucky, at +231 (win $231 for a $100 wager), is the favorite to win the NCAA Basketball Tournament championship according to the offshore sports book, Pinnacle.com. Second favorite is Ohio State at +543, followed by North Carolina at +703, Michigan State at +904, and Syracuse at +937. UNLV is +12053. It's just been announced that New York's the ONE Group hospitality company (behind Cosmo's STK, among other things) has acquired the former Nikki Beach nightclub and beach club at the Trop, which it will run in conjunction with New York/LA-based Bagatelle America. The transition will be effective April 1, with renovation of the beach club set for late spring and the nightclub following shortly thereafter.
The annual parade of the 18-wheel trucks carrying the NASCAR Sprint Cup racers will take place on the Strip this evening from 6 p.m., when they'll depart their staging area at South Point and head north about 5 miles to Sahara. About 50 trucks are expected to take part this evening, so expect Strip traffic to be even slower than usual.

According to the latest figures released by the Gaming Control Board, Las Vegas Strip gambling revenue was up 29 percent to $623.5 million in January, compared to the same month last year, while revenue for all of Clark County increased 22 percent to $925.5 million. The steep rise was aided largely by a surge in baccarat winnings, as a result of Chinese New Year (excluding that game, statewide revenue for the month increased 4 percent.)
Visitation in January was also up slightly to nearly 3.2 million, just under 1% more than came during the same month last year. Average hotel rates, meanwhile were up more than 6%. Singer Jimmy Buffett, creator of the "Margaritaville" brand, has been granted a license to run his casino-within-a-casino inside the Flamingo, having been unanimously approved by the Gaming Control Board. The licensing process can be arduous and costly, and involves digging deep into the applicants prior business and personal records, but Buffett was approved despite a couple of prior run-ins with the law.

Six defendants, including a casino owner Milton McGregor and three politicians, were today found not guilty in a federal corruption trial dating back to 2010, in which the defendants were accused of conspiring to bribe state lawmakers in exchange for their votes to pass gambling legislation that would have legalized non-Tribal casinos. In a previous trial the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Three accused had already pleaded guilty prior to the second trial, and one defendant died.

After months of speculation, we can now confirm that Cirque du Soleil's Viva Elvis show is set to close this August 18, even soon than anticipated, while its replacement will be Zarkana, a "surreal acrobatic spectacle" (aren't all Cirque shows?), which has been on tour internationally but will make a permanent home at Aria, starting with previews this October and an official grand opening the following month.
It's finally been announced, or rather leaked via an employee memo that fell into Fox5 News' hands, that O'Sheas will close April 30. The closure is part of the ongoing Linq project from Caesars Ent., which plans to transform/upgrade their center-Strip properties, including IP and Flamingo, and incorporate them into an al fresco dining and entertaiment complex. According to a second memo, the parking garage will close on March 19, with demolition slated to begin the next day.
So, at least O'Sheas will get one last crack at celebrating St. Patrick's Day, but which venue will take over the mantle as Las Vegas' new beer pong capital, we'd like to know?
The R-J reports that the proposed Charlie Palmer Hotel in the Symphony Park area downtown has been postponed for another year, amidst skepticism among some City Council members regarding the commitment of the celebrity chef and his partner to bring the project to fruition. Others, including Mayor Carolyn Goodman, suggested the city collaborate with the developers to help identify more incentives to build, including a goverment scheme that awards tax credits for money invested in projects in low income areas.

The first West Coast location of the Mexican eatery Carlos 'n Charlie's is set to debut at the Flamingo in April, and is currently hiring for nearly 200 postions, including servers, cooks, bar backs, and hostesses. Applications are being accepted online at www.Caesars.com/employment through Friday.
The Tournament of Kings show at Excalibur is in the midst of an upgrade, involving changes to the set and costumes, which is due to be completed by the end of this month. The show's contract has also just been extended through 2015.
The high winds this afternoon -- a 60 m.p.h. gust was reported earlier today -- have wreaked havoc around the valley, with 14,000 homes currently suffering power outages, flight delays of up to three hours out of McCarran (check the airport's website for updates), road closures, including US 93 at Hoover Dam (due to downed power lines), and delays due to traffic-light outages, including at Charleston and Main.
We weren't aware of a wildlife problem on the Strip, but apparently now animals, as well as children, are subject to a curfew, following the County Commission's unanimously vote today to ban certain creatures (including jackals, badgers, and armadillos*) on pedestrian bridges and sidewalks from noon to 5 a.m.
Service animals are exempted from the new rule under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, as are those covered by a business license or other written government permission. Household pets must be on a leash or other restraint no longer than 3 feet. According to the R-J, the restricted areas include the Strip on either side for 200 yards from Sahara Avenue to Sunset Road.
*Okay, we made that bit up.
Rain and snow may be forecast for this evening, but that hasn't deterred Mandalay Beach and Moorea Beach from opening already at Mandalay Bay, while Wet Republic and Hard Rock "Beachlife," which encompasses the entire pool complex, including Rehab, will be open for business as of Friday, March 9.

On the back of the launch of his own vodka brand, the ever-entrepreneurial Flavor Flav debuts his new Las Vegas restaurant, House of Flavor, on March 15. Located at 3333 S. Maryland Parkway (across from the Boulevard Mall), the new restaurant was scheduled to open last May in the Riviera, but never materialized. This will be Flav's second foray into the food biz: He briefly was involved in Flav's Fried Chicken in Clinton, Iowas, but pulled the licensing agreement after less than four months, having pulled a surprise visit on his partner: "Let me be straight up with you, I went up inside there on April 2 and I found potato salad that expired on February 28. And it's then when I realized I can't do business with this man and I really hope no one ate those potatoes," commented Flav on the abrupt closure. Let's hope his new venture works out better.

Hot N Juicy Crawfish, the Las Vegas-born restaurant that now has two venues in town, plus other in Washington D.C. and Orlando, Fl., has announced plans to open a 6,000-square-foot restaurant in Orange County in a yet-to-be-announced location. Things are happening at Fitzgeralds. The first-floor bar has been removed, pending the the opening of the the new "Long Bar," which is being constructed out of sight. The blackjack party pit near the door has been shut down and go go girls will soon perform in the main pit, similar to the Golden Gate. Lots of other construction will soon be underway at the new-look casino that will announce its new name this month.
Purple Reign, the popular Prince tribute band that's been a feature at various casino showrooms over the years, will complete its run at Hooters at the end of March, it was disclosed today via Twitter. Apparently, a new venue is lined up, but they can't release details as yet. We'll keep you posted.
While news came this week that powers in the Philippine's are attempting to ban Steve Wynn from doing business there, as part of the fallout of the ongoing feud between him and Asian slot tycoon Kazuo Okada, the casino billionaire seems undaunted and this week unveiled plans to build a massive resort-casino in Massachusetts, close to the home of the New England Patriots. Wynn apparently mailed a brochure and 20-minute DVD to thousands of Foxborough households explaining the proposal, which has to date met with resistance from many residents worried about traffic congestion and the risk of increased crime. If it goes ahead, the $1 billion-resort, which looks like a massive 6-story rustic lodge, will feature a luxury hotel, convention space, covered parking garage, public skating rink, a spa, fine dining and casual restaurants, retail outlets, and a performance theater.

Tim Tebow will be in Las Vegas this weekend, visiting a the Canyon Ridge Christian Church (6200 West Lone Mountain Road), which was selected as one of only seven church's around the country to receive visits from Tebow. The venue seats three thousand people and a viewing tent has been constructed outside to accommodate an additional 2 thousand. The Bronco's quarterback will give a 40 minute interview and Q&A session at services that will run over two days (Saturday, 4 and 6:30 p.m.; Sunday 9 and 11 a.m.) The events are free to anyone to attend and admission will be on a first come, first served basis.

Tonight's First Friday arts fest downtown will feature the much-publicized public burning of "Lucky Lady Lucy," a 20-foot wooden showgirl sculpture, plus other attendant Burning Man-type shennanigans, on the corner of Third Street and Colorado Avenue. The event promises to make this First Friday the biggest ever, so good luck finding a parking spot.
