Question of the Day - 04 July 2011

Q:
It has been about 4 years since you have addressed this question, so I am hoping it is time to do some new research. My girlfriend and I are going to be in Vegas for her birthday, August 5th. Are there any casinos that do anything special for birthdays?
A:

We're going to keep this one brief, as the short answer is that few casinos do anything significant for your birthday these days, especially if you're not in their player's club. If you are, you probably already received something in the mail and might get extra points on your birthday, plus maybe a comp to the buffet or coffee shop, but nothing really worth writing home about.

In the past, some casinos used to do a little bit more to celebrate, but not so much these days, when everyone's tightening their belt. For example, the Palms used to offer a $150 spa, food, or free play credit. Today, you get a meal voucher in the mail, and that's only if you're a local who's shown consistent play. Nothing for out-of-towners.

Nevada Palace used to be the best for a birthday bonanza, offering a free T-shirt and coffee mug, a voucher valid for double pay if you hit a royal on your special day and, if you returned the following day, a prize balloon that included perks like coin bonuses, hotel stays, and other gifts. But the Nevada Palace closed more than three years ago. (We don't think this had anything to do with their generous birthay promo, however).

Today, Santa Fe Station's long-running $25 table bet is undoubtedly the best birthday promo out there. You don't even have to be in the player's club; just present a valid ID on your birthday. Otherwise, for a non-casino option, Todai Asian/sushi buffet in the Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood offers a free buffet to the birthday boy or girl, provided there are three paying adults in your party; otherwise, it's 50% off.

On the other hand, Vegas is all about cutting loose and celebrating, and if you spread the word along the way, you never know what people might do for you. If you're making a restaurant reservation anywhere halfway decent, for example, let them know when you're booking that it's your girlfriend's birthday and they'll probably do something special for dessert. It always pays to ask.
