The food court at the Monte Carlo is closed now. That means that there are no places to eat after midnight or 2 a.m. some days. Isn’t this a violation of their gaming license? I thought casinos had to have food available 24 hours a day.
Well, it turns out that the 24-hour rule is nothing more than a common misperception.
We ourselves believed that to be the case, but then got to questioning it, which, after all, is the ultimate purpose of Question of the Day.
We couldn't find any rule, or even come close, on a Google search.
So we phoned the Nevada Gaming Control Board and were told that no such statewide regulation exists. Perhaps, the GCB said, it's a county-by-county matter.
Then we rang up Clark County Public Information Officer Dan Kulin, who said that he, too, was unaware of any such statute in the county.
MGM would know full well it was flouting a law if it didn’t have round-the-clock dining at Monte Carlo, so it seems to be in the clear. Alas, that’s probably not much comfort for guests seeking a meal in the wee hours and having to go elsewhere or hungry.
