Question of the Day - 24 October 2017

Q:

The food court at the Monte Carlo is closed now. That means that there are no places to eat after midnight or 2 a.m. some days. Isn’t this a violation of their gaming license? I thought casinos had to have food available 24 hours a day.

A:

Well, it turns out that the 24-hour rule is nothing more than a common misperception.

We ourselves believed that to be the case, but then got to questioning it, which, after all, is the ultimate purpose of Question of the Day.

We couldn't find any rule, or even come close, on a Google search.

So we phoned the Nevada Gaming Control Board and were told that no such statewide regulation exists. Perhaps, the GCB said, it's a county-by-county matter.

Then we rang up Clark County Public Information Officer Dan Kulin, who said that he, too, was unaware of any such statute in the county.

MGM would know full well it was flouting a law if it didn’t have round-the-clock dining at Monte Carlo, so it seems to be in the clear. Alas, that’s probably not much comfort for guests seeking a meal in the wee hours and having to go elsewhere or hungry.

    Monte Carlo food
Thanks for the tip about the lack of 24hr food service at the Monte Carlo. We come for trade shows and stay an extra day or two. The MC is now off out list of approved hotels for our staff.
    We usually take 5 rooms.

This is probably a temporary situation as Monte Carlo goes thru renovations and rebranding.

    Reason For 24/7 Food
It's just good business sense to keep a source of food and drink available to the gamblers that are there off hours.
No casino wants to lose a gambler over lack of food.

    Found the 24-hour restaurant law
From the Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS):

NRS 463.1605(1) Only "resort hotels" may have unrestricted gaming licenses.

NRS 463.01865(3) A "resort hotel" is required to have "at least one restaurant with permanent seating capacity for more than 60 patrons that is open to the public 24 hours each day and 7 days each week."

    24/7 Food
Just a thought: Are you sure you're looking in the right place to find regulations concerning casinos having to offer 24/7 food? I was under the impression that this was a rule of the board that handles liquor licenses.
